Three Point Line -why We Aren't Emergent

Triumph and Triology

Richard Beattie
Theology by definition is "the study of the nature of God and religious truth." In college I was schooled on three types of theology: 1. Biblical; 2. Systematic, and 3. Evangelical. Biblical Theology is studying God's Word, how it relates to our culture and how we communicate with God. Systematic Theology is the process in which we thing about important matters such as doctrine, who God is, and orthodoxy especially in regard to the Trinity, God's motive, following the approach of Jesus, and being powered by the Holy Spirit. The third Theology is Evangelical Theology which is based on the Great Commission, Calling and purpose as well as Missional thinking and doing. In writing about these three branches of theology it occurs to me that the three point line is something that I am calling Tri-ology!

Correction-challenge-change

In the book "Influencer" the authors assert that it is imperative to realize that we cannot reach our full potential with out a three point plan. Our distraction level is way off mark when the cell phone starts ringing, our deadlines and our schedules keep us from our divine appointments. In order to really study and focus on our calling we must take time to practice what we preach. That isn't talking about "walking the walk and talking the talk," it moreover is revealing that we could all use practice in preaching! Taking time to make corrections and edits is imperative to communicating the message better, rising to the challenges that God is given us is paramount to the transformation process, this leads to compelling change.

Triology- a three step process

All of this is related to Triology! Where the Biblical corrects, the systematic challenges, the evangelical changes! Process is something that helps us come up with God ordained hypothesis, Christ following theory and action packed evangelism powered by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. In another book there is a loving critique of the Emergent Church, called "Why we're not Emergent." It takes the relativistic nature of Emergent Leaders and begs them to "stand for something." The danger of the movement is not it's emphasis on the arts and/or media, it is the void of meaningful definition of calling, a cheapening of the meaning of the cross, and a disdain for the fusion of faith and good works and many attributes of Biblical, Systematic, and Evangelical Theology.

  • Triology is Biblical, systematic and evangelical
  • Compelling change comes from correction and challenge
  • Influential process comes from focus, practice and time
The Emergent Church movement is all over the map and it is dangerously leading people away from Trinitarian living and an Evangelical Lifestyle.
