But in modern times, what lurks around our campfires, and even undergo scientific study and have institutions named for them? Let's try and compile a list...a serious list, because many of these things we shall mention have created hysteria to the point of medical and psychological problems in those who have encountered them.
Ghosts: They are quite antiquated, of course, but ever so often in our history, Ghosts come to the forefront. With the invention of the camera, kerlian photography; the development of mediums or those who can communicate with the dead, etc. Harry Houdini devoted a large part of his life exposing "tricks" used by mediums in their endeavors to become rich off the bereaved. All mediums are not fake, and there are many new forefronts with instrumentation that can document ghosts in our presence. We must keep in mind that what we record is only a snapshot in time, and nothing may be occurring when we make our attempts to communicate. Some examples of scientific approaches are: Ultra Violet Recording in which a specific segment of light bandwidth is recorded, to be viewed later; EVP or electronic voice phenomena. Many people use digital recorders to do this, but the first discovery was made on audio tape. The sound recorded will not necessarily be heard during the recording process but, during playback. It has even been discovered on the reverse side of the audio tape or recorded backwards; EMF or electro-motive force (or field) which is an energy surge captured by a device designed to record EMF. Many electronic devices have a constant output of EMF. It is areas where one would not expect EMF readings to be elevated that would certainly call one's attention to the EMF. Cold spots are also attributed to areas of EMF on the theory that the entity draws energy from surrounding areas. There are more devices, but due to space we should stop here.
UFO's: Speaking of space, UFO's have been on our minds since about 1948, but did they just come into existence with man's ability to overcome gravity? I would like to say, "I doubt it". Of course, Roswell was a major stepping stone for Ufologists; but, I have no doubt that they would agree that, in retrospect, signs of UFO's have existed into ancient cultures such as the Mayans, Aztecs, and Egyptians. There are signs that are meant to be seen from a great distance in the air that are almost as old as civilization itself; the Bimini signs, for instance. Our government conducted experiments on UFO sightings until 1969 or so we are told. If rationality is included in the equation, perhaps "Bluebook" or something like it is still going on. People say ET experiments are being conducted at Groom Lake or Area 51, but I still believe in the old flag with the rattler on it that has a caption, "don't tread on me", so I will leave this alone. Modern astronomy had brought us a world of ET sighting equipment in the course of development of astronomy. Telescopes are the best they have ever been, including Hubble which eliminates atmospheric intervention. Many radio telescopes constantly scan the heavens, as well, awaiting a reply from transmissions sent years ago.
Bigfoot: Is it possible for an ape-like creature with man-like intelligence to exist in different parts of our world; particularly in the Pacific Northwest; in our "beautiful backyard". I would say a resounding yes if I were camping 10 miles from nowhere and had pinecones thrown at my tent! Some say this has happened to them. I go back to when we said everything we record is just a snapshot in time. What are the chances of us standing outside with the camera ready and photographing a jet at 1:00 P. M.? Not good. We know the camera will record a photo of a jet. We know that jets exist. Our greatest variable is knowing that the jet is going over at one and taking the photo. As fast as they move, we'll probably get one chance. You can tell someone you saw this and almost got a photo and they will probably believe you. This probability increases if you have 3 or 4 people to corroborate your story. But, remember...we're talking about jets. What if you said, "Bigfoot'? And, you had a photograph, and you had 3 or 4 people to corroborate what you saw. Your creditability is bad now, even with proof; imagine if you decreased your variables. It won't hold water, will it? And it's a simple entry into the equation...jets are real. Unless...unless this is 1930. Do you see how a simple variable in probability either makes you credible or crazy?
