Three President's Day Crafts for Kids

Bill Smith
As President's Day approaches, you might be thinking about what activities and crafts your child can do to help celebrate the holiday. If you are looking for some fun and easy crafts that your child can do for President's Day then you might want to think about some of these ideas.

A powdered wig would be a good idea for a President's Day craft idea and is very easy to make. For your presidential powdered wig you are going to need some simple supplies which include a paper painter's hat, half a bag of cotton balls, white craft glue, a 4 inch by 2 inch piece of black felt and scissors. You can get all of these supplies at your local craft store or retail store for about ten dollars. You want to stuff something inside the painter's hat like paper towels or rags to give the hat some shape and cushion or you can use other cloth you have inside your house. Starting in the front of the hat you want to glue the cotton balls down to the hat until you reach the back of the hat and the hat is completely covered in cotton balls. Cut the black felt into 4 strips going long ways. You then want to glue two of the strips to the center of the hat over the cotton balls so that it is an upside down "V". The upside down part will be the tail of the bow. Fold the two other strips in half and then glue them together to make the bow ties that you will glue to the bottom of the bow tail. Allow the hat to dry for about five hours and then put the hat on so that the bow is in the back of your head around the base of your neck. This is a very fun and easy craft you can make for your children or have your children make and it will cost you about ten dollars to make.

A craft stick flag is also a good idea for a craft that your child can make to celebrate President's Day. This craft stick flag will need a few supplies such as 9 craft sticks, red and white paint, brushes, blue construction paper, glue, and either white paper or a white pen. You can get all of these supplies at your local retail store or craft store for about ten dollars or less. You need to paint 5 of the craft sticks red and 4 of the craft sticks white with the paint and let them dry for about three hours. You then need to glue the craft sticks together using one stick on the right in an alternating pattern so that the one stick is the pole and the other craft sticks are the flags that go outward. You need to use two broken craft sticks to hold the sticks all together in the back. Cut a small piece of blue construction paper which will be where the stars go. You can either use a white pen to draw stars on the blue paper or you can use stencil and cut them out of white paper. Glue the blue paper with the stars on it down to the front top left of the flag and then add another craft stick to the bottom of the existing craft stick on the left so that you can hold the flag in your hands. This is a very simple and easy craft that even the smallest of children can do and it will cost you a small amount of money to make.

You can also have your children make a small Abraham Lincoln penny pendant which would also be a good craft idea for President's Day. You will need white, red, and blue construction paper, white glue, scissors, a hole puncher, string or yarn in the mentioned colors, and a penny. All of these supplies you can get at your local craft store or retail store for about five dollars. You will need to cut out three stars for the pendant and they should be one in each of the colors you can either freehand the stars or use a star template. Glue the white star down to the bigger star which should be the red star and then glue the blue star onto the white star. The penny should then be glued to the smallest star with the picture of Lincoln showing. Use your hole puncher to punch a hole in the top of the star and then pull string through the hole and tie it at the ends so that it becomes a necklace. This is a very cheap and easy craft activity that your child can do for President's Day and the best part is it is not very messy at all.

  • All of these crafts will cost about ten dollars to make
