I was in Manhattan the other day; walking around near Penn Station and I happened upon this guy who had the strangest tattoo on his head. It was a tattoo which covered the majority of his skull and had some scene of dragons and wizards; the whole of the thing was actually quite enchanting. You could not see the whole of the tattoo though because the fellow had about a quarter inch of his sandy blond hair growth on his head. I was caught staring as he was eating a sandwich. He made eyes at me so I engaged him.
"What is it?" I asked, motioning to his cranium.
"A tattoo" he said sort of blandly.
The next question was a pivotal one; "Why the heck did you get a tattoo on your head?"
He sort of shrugged as if to say there was nothing else better to do. I asked if I could photograph it and he demurred (I could have photographed it; he didn't walk away or cover it up). Still I figured with all the police around because of the UN business, I had better not raise a stink. This got me thinking though of the reasons not to get a tattoo on your head. I've included three but there are infinitely more of these I could have gone with.
1) Growth: Your hair grows. Most of us have to deal with that. If you had a tattoo on your head it would constantly be getting obscured by your hair. Like this guy I saw around Penn Station.
2) Ink: I can't think of too many reasons why I'd want ink on the brain. That can't be good for your brain and even if it's not, so what? If I were going to indelibly stain my body with ink it would not be near the cranium and the brain.
3) Needle: Similarly to the ink, needles near the brain sort of freak me out. Even if the tattoo artist used toxin free ink, I still would not want those really sharp needles digging an etching into my head. Just one slip and that's it.
But if getting a tattoo on your head is what you want to do you should go ahead and do it! People in this day and age are too uptight; just because I don't want indelible ink stained mere centimeters from my brain doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to get your skull tattoo on your own skull.
