The Inclines
Two of only a few inclines that are in country still are located in Pittsburgh. The Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines are straight across the street from Station Square and are easily accessed from there. Both inclines take passengers up a steep hill and drops them off onto Mount Washington. From there you can see one of the most beautiful and probably most photographed views of the entire city. Restaurants, Church's, houses and stores are found up here, as well as many over-hanging scenic points. The Monongahela Incline opened its doors on May 28, 1870, and has transported millions of passengers since. It is now considered a historic structure by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. The incline takes passengers at an elevation of 369.39 feet, at 6 miles per hour, up the hill to Mount Washington. Fare is cheap, at $2.25 round trip for adult, $1.10 for children. The Duquesne Incline is found just a bit down the street from its counterpart, and also takes its riders up the hill to Mount Washington. Elevation is 800 feet on this incline, and still runs at 6 miles per hour. Fares are the same.
