Three Reasons Why People Become Competitive Bicycle Racers

William Tapscott
Competitive cycling appeals to many people, including older racers, and these people become competitive bicycle racers. Not all cycling enthusiasts want to just been racers; some are happy just cycling for exercise. After all, cycling is a life-time sport that can create whole-body fitness, as well as the endorphin rush that comes from any vigorous exercise. But many cyclists do race. Here are three reasons why.

Reason one: fitness. Many people find that they can take cycling for exercise to a new level when they participate in races. If you have trouble motivating yourself to exercise, you can let competitors in a race provide the motivation that you need; as you race neck to neck down the final stretch of a race, there is no difficulty feeling motivated by the experience. Older racers might not win every race, but they can have lesser goals like finishing in the top third, for example. People become competitive bicycle racers for many reasons, but simple fitness is enough to motivate many cycling enthusiasts to do this.

Reason two: pleasure. People become competitive bicycle racers as an end in itself when they find racing to be pleasurable. And racing does provide many unique pleasures to participants. Competitive cycling creates the thrill of competition for many cycling enthusiasts, which is a feeling that simply cycling for exercise does not create. Older racers who participate in races feel this competitive drive just like younger racers do, and many of them comment that racing makes them feel young. The young people, for their part, can also be intensely involved in the competition, and enjoy racing as an end in itself.

Recent three: defying one's age. Cycling for exercise is an ageless past time that people can participate in for their entire lives, the competitive cycling can also be an option for older racers. Those who participate in races feel younger because of the competitive high, the association with young people, and the sheer thrill of riding fast. They frequently find themselves outperforming younger cycling enthusiasts, which can be very satisfying.
People become competitive bicycle racers for many reasons. Whether it is cycling for exercise, the pleasure that comes when you purchase the races, or older racers ability to defy their age, there are good reasons for cycling enthusiasts and other people to become competitive bicycle racers. Competitive cycling attracts people from all walks of life and from all age groups, and is likely to continue to grow in popularity.
