Universal is in talks with Viggo Mortensen (for the Huntsman) and Charliza Theron (for the evil Queen) for Snow White and the Huntsman which is to be released on December 21, 2012. While it's been rumored they're taking a different approach and casting a lesser known actress as the lead (Riley Keough, Felicity Jones, Bella Heatcote, Saoirse Ronan and Alicia Vikander were all possible picks), its become more likely Kristen Stewart, Selena Gomez or Dakota Fanning will land the role. Reports have stated Kristen Stewart is actually in negotiations to star in the film (although there is no official word yet), which will be directed by Rupert Sanders and according to Deadline, it will be the story of the huntsman becoming Snow White's mentor after he was charged with taking her to the woods and killing her. He will be the one to teach her how to survive in the forest and defend herself when she needs to.

Then theres the Disney movie, Snow White And The Seven which has been in development since 2002. In Snow White And The Seven (expected in theaters in 2013), Snow White is an Englishwoman in 19th century Hong Kong for her father's funeral that discovers her stepmother is plotting to kill her. She flees to mainland China where a pair of seven warriors (one of which is rumored to be Jet Li) protect her and teach her to defend herself using martial arts. The front runner for Snow White has been said to be none other than Natalie Portman...however her pregnancy and future motherhood could complicate things.

Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt will rework the script and production designer John Myhre has been report to be working on the film as well. Heat Vision has reported Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend director) has been interested in the directors position for quite some time and Natalie Portman may still sign on to play the lead role.

And finally, the movie with the most development so far...Relativity Media confirmed last week in a press release they would produce an untitled Snow White film, based on the Brothers Grimm story. The script was written by Melisa Wallack and Jason Keller. Relativity said that the movie "will eschew the traditional story in favor of a more modern tale full of comedy and adventure."

"This is not your grandfather's Snow White," Producer Brett Ratner said. "Melisa went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney's film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale. Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we're going to do."

One of the producers Ryan Kavanaugh said, "This is a project we've aggressively pursued and believe in. We love Melisa Wallack's script and her fresh take on the classic story we all grew up on. This film will bring together fans of the original fair tale and draw new audiences who enjoy adventure films."

Relativity Media has announced in the press release " After her evil stepmother kills her father and destroys the kingdom, Snow White bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarfs to reclaim what is rightly hers."

Relativity Media has closed a deal with Julia Roberts to play the villainous Queen in the film which Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell) will direct. Although no other announcements have been made about the rest of the cast, Natalie Portman has been rumored to be one of the choices for Snow White.

The CEO of Relativity Media, Ryan Kavanaugh stated, "Julia was our first and only choice to play the Queen. She is an icon, and we know that she will make this role her own in a way that no one else could." The film's pre-production has begun and the release is set for June 29, 2012.
