The Three Stooges began in 1925. The original Three Stooges were Moe, Larry, and Shemp but Shemp would quit the Stooges and be replaced by Curly in 1932. The Three Stooges became instantly popular in the mid 1930's under Columbia Pictures and their popularity reached the highest points in the 1940's with Moe, Larry, and Curly. The most popular member was Curly because of his childlike mannerisms and his comedic talents. Curly was also a heavy drinking and it caught up with him in the mid 1940's. He became gravely ill and began performing less and less with the other two stooges. Curly's last year with "The Stooges" was in 1945 and his health declined until his death in 1952. Shemp would replace Curly in 1946 and be a Stooge until 1956. With Shemp, "The Three Stooges" could not bring in the audiences they once did with Curly. "The Three Stooges" tried making a comeback in 1959 with Larry, Moe, and Curly-Joe. The third Stooge was named Curly-Joe for his resemblance with the original Curly. This new trio made 4 full-length films in the next few years with the slapstick comedy made popular by the original Three Stooges. The final years were in the early 1970's because of Larry's and Moe's declining health. There have been a total of 190 short comedy "The Three Stooges" films, starting in 1930 and ending in 1970.
The only actor currently signed to the film is Sean Penn who would play "Larry". Sean Penn is best known for his roles in "Bad Boys", "Dead Man Walking" and recently "Milk" for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor. The leading candidate to play "Curly" is Jim Carrey. Even though, Carrey has not officially signed on to play the role, the actor has already made plans to gain upwards of 40 to 50 pounds to accommodate the dimensions of Curly. Jim Carrey is best known for his roles in the "Ace Ventura" movies, "The Mask", "Dumb and Dumber", "Bruce Almighty", and recently "Yes Man". Carrey has appeared in about 35 to 40 movies in total. The leading candidate to play "Moe" is Benicio del Toro. Del Toro is best known for his role in "Traffic" and is the least experienced of the three actors.

Post a CommentI think this is a train wreck waiting to happen. I am all for a new generation growing up to love the Three Stooges, but as they say on American Idol about certain songs, you just can't touch that. It's sacred. They should leave the stooges alone.
