If you have diabetes, chances are good that you have at least a few goals for developing a healthier lifestyle that will help you to better manage the condition. Indeed, diabetics need to make an everyday effort to eat well, stay physically active, and take the right medications so that they can put off many of the negative side effects of diabetes for as long as possible.

With the change in seasons, it's time to change some of those bad habits you may have for good. The summer is a perfect time to set new goals and work towards achieving them. Not only is the weather perfect for relaxing and exercising outdoors, but chances are good that you will have a more relaxed schedule as schools are not in session and many offices close early on Fridays.

Here are 3 summertime goals that should be easy to meet:

Exercise 30 minutes a day

Diabetics know that exercising is an important part of their long term care. Exercise not only helps to work off calories and decrease body fat, but it also promotes healthy blood flow and goes a long way in building a strong muscular system. No matter what your weight loss goals are, start by working out for just 30 minutes a day. Ideally, this workout will be a cardio workout, but be sure to find time to include strength training and stretching as well!

Eat 5 fruits and veggies a day

Five fruits and veggies may seem like a lot to eat in just one day. However, if you take some time to develop a meal plan each week, you may find that getting that minimum requirement in isn't so hard after all. For example, a small glass of 100% juice satisfies a fruit serving. Chips and salsa may satisfy a veggie serving. Become aware of the contents of your food and where that food falls into your prescribed diet in order to improve your nutritional balance, says TypeFree.

Breathe

Take 5 minutes right now just to breathe. Enjoy a deep, satisfying breath that lifts your belly and expands your rib cage. This deep breathing will help to add oxygen to your blood, which will slow your heart rate, decrease your stress, and make your body capably of releasing toxins stored in tense muscles. Make it a goal to breathe for 5 minutes every day - or at least to focus more on your breathing throughout the day.

Now that you have a few tips for creating a healthier life, it's time to set them into motion. You'll love the response your body gives when you eat well, exercise, and take measures to reduce your level of stress!
