Three Things to Consider when Buying a Nikon D5000

Candice W.
I recently purchased a Nikon D5000 from Best Buy. I had never owned a DSLR camera so this was a real treat for me. After reading about numerous Nikon cameras, I chose the Nikon D5000 w/ its 12.3 megapixels. It met my criteria and my price range of $800.

For those that don't know what DSLR camera is, it's a digital single lens reflex camera. This camera includes automatic and manual settings you can use to capture the photos you want.

Here are three things to consider when buying a Nikon D5000:

Want to take movies with your camera? The Nikon D5000 has a movie mode in High Definition. If you want to record things along with taking photos, the Nikon D5000 allows you to do so. One downside to the HD movie mode is that you can't zoom in while recording. Set up your camera on a tripod where you need it and press "OK" to record. If you want to move in closer, you'll have to move the camera forward yourself. The High Definition movie feature on the Nikon D5000 is a secondary feature, not the main feature of this camera.

What a great entry level DSLR camera? If you want to learn how to use the manual settings on an SLR camera, the Nikon D5000 will make you feel at ease. The camera has several automatic settings available for you to use as you get started. Then you can take the leap to manual settings. If you're taking a photography class that requires a camera with manual settings, the Nikon D5000 will fit right in.

Want a flexible view screen? One of the best features of the Nikon D5000 is the live view LCD screen that swivels out from the camera. This allows you to use the live view at various angles to get unusual shots. If you want to photograph yourself and be able to see what you're doing, flip the live view LCD screen down and twist it toward you. The shutter speed is a little slower while using the live view, but nothing that is too troublesome. The benefits of the swivel LCD screen outweigh the lag time.

In the time I've owned my Nikon D5000, I haven't had any real complaints. I have plans to grow into this camera and expand with Nikon lenses. I'm still learning, but I give the Nikon D5000 two thumbs up. Feel free to leave comments and questions.
