Three Tips to Help You Make the Most of Job Fairs
I am always amazed when I attend job fairs at the utter lack of effort that some people put forth. After observing several job fairs and doing some serious people watching, I have come up with the following three simple, yet effective tips that will help you make the most of your next job fair.
Dress to Impress: If you were going to hire someone, would you choose the person who is dressed in a professional manner, or the person with shorts, a tank top, and flip-flops? Well, all the potential employers at the job fairs are no different. It makes sense really. If you can't put forth the effort to dress nice when you are looking for a job, what is the hope that you will do so once you have a job?
Bring Resumes: When you hit your next job fair, be sure to bring resumes. Now, notice I said resumes, not resume. You never know the amount of opportunities that you will encounter at a job fair, so prepare for this. Bring at least 25 copies of your resume just in case. It is far better to go home with five left-over resumes than it is to go home with none, but know that you could have used an extra 10 or so.
Talk: This is a big one. So many people look at the various jobs that are presented at a job fair, but they ask no question and engage in exactly zero conversation. How do you expect a potential employer to learn about you if you keep your lips sealed 100% of the time? Don't go to a job fair simply to pick up literature, go there to find a job.
Be prepared the next time you attend a job fair. When competition is tight for employment then only those who stand out will get the opportunities for employment. You can be the one who stands out, but only if you dress to impress, bring your resumes, and actually say more than just hi and goodbye.
