Three Top Tourist Attractions in Christchurch, New Zealand

Christchurch is Known for Its Trams, Gondola and Punting on the Avon River

The Christchurch Tram Service

The vintage trams that service Christchurch have been beautifully restored and each one is different in appearance. One of the trailers was originally a horse-drawn tram that was used in Dunedin until 1880. Two of the trams were used in Melbourne, Australia.

The trams ride through the city centre and the driver gives a commentary on the buildings and sights in the area. There are 11 stops and a ticket allows people to jump on and off as many times as they wish over a two day period. The stops include Cathedral Square, the Arts Center, Christchurch Art Gallery, and Canterbury Museum. New Regent Street is a restored Art Deco pedestrian mall with quaint shops, and the Tram Station offers shops and cafes.

There is also a Restaurant Tram that rides the tram circuit at night while guests enjoy fine food and wine. This seats 36 and bookings are essential.

The Christchurch Gondola

The Christchurch Gondola rises from its base station to the top of Mount Cavendish at an altitude of 1500 feet. Each car holds four people and offers amazing 360° views across Pegasus Bay and the Pacific Ocean to Kaikoura; over Banks Peninsula, Lake Ellesmere and Lyttleton Harbour, and across the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps.

The four-storey top station includes the Summit Cafe, the Pinnacle Restaurant, a souvenir shop and the Time Tunnel ride. The Time Tunnel is included in the Gondola fare and offers a six minute ride through the history of the area. Visitors sit in a four-person vehicle that moves through 3D displays and video footage of the area. The presentation includes movement and sound and is very well put together.

Punting on the Avon River

Punting is generally available 365 days a year. There is a city ride and a park ride and these leave from different locations. Each ride is thirty minutes long and the punts are Edwardian style and equipped with blankets and large umbrellas. The punter will give a commentary on the area if asked or the passengers can simply relax and enjoy the ride if they prefer.

The Antigua Boatsheds are a historical part of Christchurch and home to the ten punts owned by the company. A bridal punt is available and the punts are available for hire for weddings and photos. Advance booking is essential for this.

Christchurch is a beautiful city with much to offer tourists. A combo ticket is available that gives discounted access to the trams, Gondola, and punting on the Avon. These three activities are must-dos for tourists and give a well-rounded view and experience of Christchurch and its surrounds.
