Three Travel Tips for Going Abroad

Patrick McDonnough
Are you intrigued by new customs, lands, foods, and the adventure brought on by visiting a new place? Are you ready for that dream vacation? Most people book their tickets, pack their bags, and think their ready to go. Traveling "well" requires a little more preparation to take it to the next level. Since you have the choice, don't allow your next trip to be plagued by mediocrity. Whether you're on your way to Cancun to escape the winter or to Paris to enjoy the fine wine, let me share with you a few suggestions to make your trip more successful.

Blend In
Have you ever been to a sports game where you were the lone supporter in a sea of opposition? Well, don't let the same feelings of uneasiness and awkwardness become a part of your dream vacation! See what the locals are wearing and try to emulate their style. Stop by a local shop to pick up a shirt or a pair of trousers. We've all seen the stereotypical tourist guy with his Hawaiian shirt, fanny pack, and big straw hat. Instead, go for something simple - khakis and a polo shirt or a nice t-shirt. A little local flair will help you to integrate more naturally and give you a more enjoyable experience.

Learn the Language Basics
Traveling to China to see the great wall? Familiarity with a few simple phrases will help to make everything simpler. Learning how to say "No, thank you" or "Where is the bathroom?" will make your trip easier and much more enjoyable! It's easy to pick up some language learning materials from the library a few weeks before your plane leaves. Listening to them on your way to and from work should give you just enough time to learn those few key phrases. This will help you to feel more comfortable in those situations where you need a bathroom, but just can't seem to find one.

Travel with a Local
Most seasoned tourists have been on countless bus tours and walking tours. These tours tend to miss the key flavors of the town. You certainly don't feel like you "experienced" the city afterwards, and you're lucky if you can even remember a few of the statistics that were spouted off. Instead, plan ahead and try to find someone using a reputable website based in the area. Ask them if they'll take you around a little bit, tell them what you're planning to do on your trip. Do you want to try the food? The music? Perhaps you're planning to just sit in a local café and enjoy the music from the charming mandolin player. For any of these, a local guide can make it a much safer and more pleasant experience.

With these few tips, you can look forward to that dream vacation with confidence. As you're planning your next trip, think ahead and you can have a once-in-a-lifetime vacation every time you travel! Bon voyage.
