Three Ways to Become a Known Writer

Harold Dean Sink
The first step in becoming a well-known writer is to spread the word. This can be done in many ways with the first being to tell all those you know that you are pursuing such a career. Following that with handing out business cards to anyone and everyone you meet will also boost your popularity. This will be the least expensive way to announce your career in writing to those who are interested. Writing to radio and television stations may seem a bit overeager, but if you have a publicist, let them handle this. Spreading the word is just one third of the battle in becoming a known writer.

Secondly, become published in the area or areas you want to be known. If you write technology based articles, send copies to magazines such as Discover Magazine, InfoWorld, and other similar publishers. You may receive many rejections, but all it takes is that one publisher to get you noticed and marketed. Don't stop there either. Send submissions to newspapers, periodical and book publishers, and anyone else you can think of who may have a need for your articles. Expanding your arena of writing will open even more doors for you as well. Becoming a known writer will bring you more work.

The last step is also a step that should go hand in hand with the first step. Socialize with other writers. They can guide, criticize and help you through your career. Of course you make the ultimate decision on what you write, but with a network of other writers you will see how you can improve. Some of the best writers in history kept relations with fellow writers to help them expand their minds. Whether you communicate in person, by mail or online, don't isolate yourself. An excellent writer is open to suggestions and ideas that are not their own. Learn from others while you grow as a writer. Your popularity will grow faster than you would ever think it would.

As a footnote, choosing what to write is a difficult decision for many writers. This is when it is time to read what others have written. Learn as you earn, and become a better writer from reading. You may find words leaping out at you as you read. Write them down along with any thoughts. Keep a journal to go back to for reference. Becoming a well-known writer is much more than just writing as you now know. Read and learn as much as you can. In the end, it will pay off.

I don't write as much as I used to, but I do find it as a way to put my thoughts on paper or on the computer.  View profile
