Perhaps best known is the Salvation Army "Superstore" at 4640 Whipple Avenue, the store is bigger than many area department stores, has ample easy to access parking, and has an ever-changing variety of goods. The Salvation Army Store relies on donations and offers almost all inventory at 50% off already very low prices on Wednesdays. The non-profit organization funds programs to house homeless families, clothe women and children forced form their homes by domestic violence and families displaced by fires and other situations, and feeds the poor in the area as well.
Also on Whipple South is The Village Thrift at 2859 Whipple Avenue, it is a privately run enterprise that sells closeouts, goods bought at salvage sales, and estate sales and some donated goods. Many new items are available; some still carry their original receipts showing the drastic markdowns offered by the store. Parking is easily accessible.
Consignment stores like Encore at 4125 Cleveland Avenue, Déjà vu at 4431 20th Street, Platos Closet at 4711 Dressler Road, and Another Look at 5410 Fulton Ave offer shoppers as much as 75% off retail prices for items that have sometimes been worn once or not at all. Some are displayed with original price tags still attached. Each of these stores buys inventory from customers by offering store credit or cash. Donations are also accepted.
For strictly household goods and building materials Canton has two choices: Habitat for Humanity Restore at 4525 Cleveland Avenue a national institution, and Stockpile at 1387 Clarendon. They accept donations of building goods, household goods, large appliances, and furniture, (no clothing or toys) both are non-profit and community based. Stockpile requires a free membership but the application process is easy and memberships are given immediately. Membership allows for information and participation in the monthly "First Thursday" discount program. Both have difficult parking situations but easy loading/unloading docks with lots of help so donating and purchasing is easy.
Goodwill Industries, a for profit corporation often mistaken for a charity, has three stores. One is located on Main Street in North Canton, on Route 62 East and on Waterloo in South Akron. Each week they mark a fraction of their inventory at half price color-coded tags identify the discounted items.
