And there isn't any better place to do that than in Brooklyn, and Beacon's Closet in particular in Willamsburg (and Park Slope). If Wal-Mart was a thrift store, it would be Beacon's closet. It is literally the Mecca of vintage clothing. I went in there the other day and scored two pairs of plaid pants and a Member's Only jacket for the fall (did I tell you I was an old man or what?). I ended up dropping only $20.
Now, in this day and age, thrift stores and vintage clothing does not always equal low prices. So Beacon's Closet does have some pricey items. But there are so many things to choose from, you can literally spend hours in there checking things out. Which is exactly what I did the other day. Before I knew it they were closing and I still had two arms full of stuff to try on.
The good news is that they put some select items on their website so you can shop to your little heart's delight right online. They also have a great sell/trade program so if you have an overflowing closet, you should check them out to get rid of the clothes you don't want and score some drinking money.
I can only imagine how miserly I will be when I actually get to be an octogenarian. Either way, I'll be headed to Beacon's Closet for all my plaid pants!
