In changing economic times, opening a new store may not be the smartest move. For the owners of Thrifty Sisters Treasures in Lovettsville, theirs is perhaps a brilliant business decision.

The shop, which opened in September, is located in downtown Lovettsville. Thrifty Sisters Treasures shares the block with town staples Greater Goods, Beauty on Broadway, Lovettsville Pizza & Subs and Kathy's Keepsakes. Housed in the former location of Kathy's Keepsakes, the building was originally a dairy farmer's shed. It has no plumbing and few built-in amenities but its tin roof, rustic windows, and exposed inner beams are reminiscent of Grandpa's beloved workshop. The pastel color lovingly applied to the exterior and mix of paints, soft fabrics and antiques inside convert the space into Grandma's treasured country parlor.

The real treasures here are the low prices and high quality merchandise. While the items are second-hand, a thorough investigation revealed beautiful pieces devoid of a single chip, crack, stain or blemish of any kind. Prepare to be floored to discover a great bargain -- in perfect condition -- for next to nothing. On my first visit to Thrifty Sisters Treasures I was surprised to find a pair of name-brand jeans that usually retail for at least $75 dollars. A perfect fit on me, I was even more astonished when I looked at the price tag: $6 dollars and fifty cents! Needless to say, I took them home.

The People of Thrifty Sisters Treasures

Both times I visited the shop I was warmly welcomed by Heather. She is a cheerful soul who lets her customers shop for themselves but is more than willing to assist and answer questions when needed. Sometimes she is joined by her year-old son, her husband or her sister Kelly, with whom she shares store ownership. While Heather and Kelly hope to eventually remove the play crib from the front room, it does lend a familial atmosphere to the shop: You're more than just a customer, you're a welcome family friend.

Thrifty with a Broad Appeal

At Thrifty Sisters Treasures, you may find yourself purchasing items you don't really need because the bargains are too good to pass up. The store is a perfect place to find unique gifts. Additionally, the vintage home decor on display is not only in great condition, it is priced to move fast. That makes Thrifty Sisters Treasures a great destination for anyone looking to spruce up a stale home with inexpensive vintage pieces. My careful review of the second hand clothing exposed even more quality merchandise in excellent condition at rock bottom prices. Because of the great quality and prices, merchandise is always changing, and each time you visit you are likely to find another must-have item.

The front room of Thrifty Sisters Treasures contains both seasonal and non-seasonal decor, baskets, vintage and handmade jewelry, antique collectibles and artwork. Among the choice items I found was a ceramic basin and pitcher set with green trim and a floral design for just $15 dollars. The back room houses more decor, mirrors, wall sconces, candle holders, art and picture frames, a few books, a quilt or two, handmade scarves, women's clothing and a fabulous children's section. Most of the items are available for mere pocket change. The wearables are displayed on three full racks divided into outerwear, tops and bottoms. A few pair of shoes line the top of the racks. It's hard to find second-hand shoes that are like new, and it's obvious that the sisters don't put every pair they come across up for sale.

As for me, I debated getting the pitcher and basin for a friend, but it was gone the next day. I found two beautiful name-brand tops that retail new for at least $50 dollars each and bought them for $13 dollars total. I also purchased a gorgeous sterling silver and crystal pendant for a trifling $7 dollars. I gave it to my husband to give me on a later date. He's pleased to know he's giving me something that looks far more valuable than it cost! I'm debating whether I should purchase two iron wall sconces and paint them to match my home: Voila, easy customized home decor for a total of $10 dollars. I foresee many trips to this thrifty little shop.

Not All that Glitters is Gold

At the present time, the shop only accepts cash or checks for purchases. They are unable to run charges due to a computer glitch at the phone company. The sisters hope to take credit cards in the near future.

Out of towners discovering Lovettsville will want to explore this shop. Visitors should be aware that the old wooden walls mean finding the occasional wood beetle among the merchandise, and the squirrels running along the tin roof create quite a commotion! Nature aside, you are sure to appreciate this great little thrift store the next time you come through Lovettsville and visit.

Sounds like a cool store. I love thrift stores. My favorite around here is the Volunteers of America store in Circleville OH.
