Sit in a suitable yogic posture with both your hands resting on your respective knees with the thumbs touching to your first fingers and remaining fingers in open and stretched out condition. Concentrate by taking deep and slow breaths so as to mentally isolate yourself before actually starting this pranayama. Touch your palate with your tongue by twisting it. Then, close both the jaws with the teeth, keeping your lips slightly open. Inhale forcefully through your mouth till your lungs are full of fresh air. The incoming air will pass through the closed teeth, giving cooling effect to it due to wetness of your tongue. Retain your breath inside. Perform the Jalandhar bandha by touching your chin to the pit of your neck by bending your face slightly. Remain in this position for as long as you can. The maximum period of around 30 seconds would be fine as a final target. The initial time can be around 10 seconds. Then, finally close your mouth and exhale very slowly through both the nostrils after unlocking the bandha. Repeat this exercise for around 8 to 10 times daily. This pranayama may not be done for its full duration in winter season. However, it can be done to its full duration in summer. This pranayama can also be done without doing the Jalandhar bandha.
There are many benefits of doing this pranayama. The most important of all is that it can cure all the diseases pertaining to teeth, including Payrioa (tooth decay), throat cavity, mouth, nose, and tongue. The dryness of the tongue is also cured by this pranayama. It also removes the feeling of drowsiness during the day time. It keeps the body cool and calm, even in peak summer. This Shitkari pranayama is also an effective long term cure of high blood pressure if done for 50 to 60 times per day. It is suggested to consume a glass of water after doing this pranayama so as to derive the optimum benefits of this pranayama. The sick persons having high fever should not perform this pranayama till the fever has completely disappeared. The early morning hour after clearing all your bowels is the most suitable time to perform this pranayama. It can also be done in the evening hours, again with empty stomach. This pranayama is the most suitable for the hot countries like India. However, it can be also very suitable during summer days here in the USA.
Irrespective of the season, this pranayama can cure almost all the diseases and the decay of all the organs situated in mouth cavity. That is why one and all must start this pranayama immediately. I am quiet confident about the benefits that they will get by doing this pranayama regularly on daily basis. In case of doubt, all readers are free to contact me.
