Through the Years

Douglas E. Winters III
Through the years their love had shown,
Two kindred hearts as one had grown.

Longing by day to touch his face,
But only in dreams did he find her embrace.

For life had played them a cruel hand of fate,
Two hearts in love, but in love too late.

Yearning to break those dividing chains,
Such strong emotions, but still what remained;

The struggle within to do what was right,
Wings kept closed, never to take flight.

His heart filled with sorrow, her heart full of pain,
They had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Decisions they made, respectful in fashion,
Could not dull the flame, could not kill the passion.

Their burning desire was stronger than ever,
The bond they had made, they could not sever.

A place in his soul he kept wide open,
for the love of his life, his faith was unbroken.

They were lovers in mind; they were lovers in heart,
But decisions they made would keep them apart.

Two kindred hearts, as one would remain,
They had everything to lose and nothing to gain.

So romantic, but sad too. You really have a way with words. :)
