First things first, if you are going to throw a party based around a meteor shower you need to know when the next one will be. After all, the whole point of a meteor party is the meteors, right? Check the StarDate.org website to get the dates of expected meteor showers and then plan your party on one of those dates.
You'll be able to see more meteors if you choose a date when the moon is relatively dim. If the moon is too bright the light from it can overpower many of the smaller meteors and hinder your viewing.
Once you have your date selected, its time to get busy planning your party.
First decide if you want to decorate for the party. Star or space themed plates and decorations can help to add to the festive feel and make it seem like more of an event. There are a lot of really cool space themed decorations out there so be sure to shop around and find some that suit the mood you want for your party.
Next, you'll need to plan what to eat. For fun snacks choose star shaped food including fruit, crackers and cookies. Get a jar of Tang to mix up and serve as a beverage. If you are really ambitious you can even bake a cake and decorate it with an outerspace theme.
Depending on when you are having your party you may also want to include food for a meal. In the spring, summer, or early fall barbecue is a great choice since everyone can hang out outside and be ready when the meteor shower starts.
Finally, plan some comfortable outdoor seating. When thinking about your seating remember that everyone is going to be looking up at the sky. Lounge chairs are a great choice since they allow you to comfortably recline and still see the sky without straining your neck. You may even want to lay out blankets for people to lay on.
If you are partying outdoors you can have light from outdoor lights, candles or a campfire. Just be sure to put out the fire or turn off the lights when the meteor shower starts so the light won't interfere with your viewing.
Once you have everything ready all that's left to do is to keep your fingers crossed for clear skies and then have fun at your party.
