Timing - The most important part of the tailgate party is the timing. Consider having a pre and post party to avoid sitting in a car trying to get out of a traffic jam packed parking lot.
Location - Try to find locations within the parking lot that have high levels of foot traffic; this will ensure you are the envy of all tailgaters. It is the best feeling to watch a bunch of people pass by wishing they were in your seat.
Things to Bring - Show your team spirit and display as many team colors, banners and pennants that you can. Streamers and festive color plates maybe found at the dollar stores. So you do not even need to spend much money on the party. One thing is that there can never be enough food or drinks at a tailgate party. Bring Your George Foreman Grill or a simple barbecue if you are a first timer and pack hotdogs, chicken wings, and burgers and do not forget the condiments and the buns. Take plenty of potato salad and coleslaw and loads of your favorite soft drinks. As for the alcohol, check with the racetrack because some places do not allow hard beverages.
Gadgets of comfort - You will need folding chairs, coolers, radio for pre-race coverage, folding tables, blankets. Gadgets to add also include playing cards, board games, a television is better and the bigger the screen the better (it attracts loads of attention)! Have an a/c power converter for any lights.
Nothing Healthy - Tailgating food is supposed to be high in fat and cholesterol so forget the diet for today and give permission to enjoy.
Helpful Hints - Need space for supplies and passengers so consider the type of vehicle you plan to take to the party. Seating is a big part of the party so take enough chairs for everyone. Umbrellas are another item that maybe helpful; if it is raining but can also be used to shelter from the sun! Tents or canopies are also nice. Trampolines are good if you've kids - I like them too!
Tailgating is a great way to get spend time with family and friends as well as an opportunity to get to know other fans. It is not very expensive and is a great alternative to a day time road trip. Give it a try - it is really a lot of FUN!
