Thunder in the Valley 2009

One of the Largest Fireworks Shows in Southeastern Ohio

Thunder in the Valley, an annual event held on the campus of Hocking College in rural southeastern Ohio. The fireworks show, set to start at 10 PM, is the culmination of a day's worth of events held in the sponsoring town of Nelsonville. While the fireworks are set off on Hocking College Campus, they can be seen from almost everywhere in town, giving residents a grand view of a spectacular show without having to brave crowds that have, in the past, gotten rowdy.

From 7:30 to 9:30 PM, Hocking Valley Scenic Railroad is offering those wishing to go on campus to view the event a round trip ride for $3 per person. This is a great service, as it drops people right at the viewing area and returns them to the other side of town at the end of the night. They claim "You'll avoid the hassle of getting out of the parking lot at Hocking College after the fireworks." The three mile trip from the train depot, which has ample parking, to the campus is also a lovely ride, and is a nice way to relax before facing the crowds.

If you are planning on viewing the show from Hocking College campus but plan to drive directly to campus, Thunder in the Valley has a detailed traffic control plan, and you will be directed to an adequate parking spot to keep things flowing smoothly and keep your vehicle out of harm's way. It may be best to review the parking plan beforehand so you can "go with the flow"

From 6:30 until 10:30 there will be beverage and food vendors available to purchase goods from. While you are allowed to bring your own, alcoholic beverages are prohibited, as Hocking College is a completely dry campus. Vendors will be located at Hocking College's Shelter House, near historic Robbins Crossing.

Not only will there be fireworks, but the whole show, which averages around a half an hour long, is choreographed to music broadcast over local station Power 105.5 FM. The hosts of Thunder in the Valley encourage you to bring your own radio and tune in. The local Nelsonville Fire Department, the main sponsor of the event, will also be on hand in case any emergencies may occur.

This is awesome! So glad you covered it! We've been staying in Athens to watch fireworks the day before the last couple of years. We used to be able to see the higher fireworks for Thunder in the Valley from our home when we lived in New Marshfield. Now we have to drive if we want to see fireworks. The train is a great idea (always wanted to do that, too!)
