If your body is causing your metabolism to slow down you'll find it extremely difficult to lose weight. Cutting calories will not work in this situation, once you start cutting those calories your body will begin to hoard and hold in it all of the calories you are consuming. So in fact the diet you're using is actually working against you. If you cut your diet down from 2000 calories to 1500 calories you would find no change in your weight if you could have a thyroid problem. Your body will not burn those calories off like a person without a thyroid problem would burn calories.
If your body is causing your metabolism to speed up this is called hyperthyroidism. If this is your problem you will find that you have an overactive thyroid and it is causing you to lose weight quickly and easily. You might think that this is a good thing to have happen but in actual fact this is very unsafe to your health. Having hypothyroidism can be tricky for the most part. Some people with this condition have been thought to have anorexia nervosa even though they eat as much food as the next person. The two conditions are far from having similarities mentally. However physically, at first glance, the these two conditions can look quite similar to each other.
In either situation whether you have an overactive or an underactive thyroid the best treatment would be the treatment advised by your doctor. As you can see having any of these two problems with your thyroid is extremely unhealthy and it can harm you if not treated properly. Bringing your thyroid back to healthy conditions would be your best bet to living a very long and healthy life. Ask your doctor if it's your thyroid causing you to gain weight or to lose weight. He will walk you through the proper treatments available so your thyroid is healthy and not a health risk.
