Ticket Punched for Success

College Fast Track Book Review

Joanne Faries

There are times when a person is overwhelmed, confused, and on the wrong track about to be hit by the oncoming train called life. Often that train is the college express, and you are sure you punched the wrong ticket. Well, fret no more. Pick up a copy or download an e-version of College Fast Track (Essential Habits for Less Stress and More Success in College) by Derrick Hibbard.

Mr. Hibbard's easy to read guide is the first step in a successful college experience, and will set a path for one's future, whether it involves further education or employment. I recommend this book to high school juniors and seniors. Frankly, anyone requiring guidance on time management, organization skills, and a reminder to set reasonable goals and enjoy life will benefit from this book. I've been in the workforce for eons, and it gave me a fresh outlook on my job.

From the foreword that explains why Derrick Hibbard chose to write this book (basically learn from his mistakes and benefit from his success), to the table of contents, to an epilogue wishing the reader future glory, this book has a common sense approach to college specifically, but it can apply to any learning environment.

The author is fresh from the college experience himself. He recognizes technological distractions and suggests using them as rewards. Study for forty-five minutes, and then treat yourself with fifteen minutes of email or social network time. Don't procrastinate and try to cram. His methods of study allow you to build your knowledge base, take solid notes, and be prepared for tests. Not only that, but you will actually retain what you've learned.

Mr. Hibbard's mantra is efficiency and effectiveness. College can overwhelm. Each professor expects a lot from students. Studying the syllabus is essential. Most professors give an outline, on the first day, of material they plan to cover. They are giving you the key to their mind. This is what is important to them, and what their tests will cover. If you take the syllabus to heart, are active in class, listen, and stay organized, you are on the right track.

I liked the suggestion to study the professor. Google the name, read the bio, and figure out what that professor really wants you to learn. There are numerous other ideas like this in this book, such as take a writing class and practice writing well. This seems obvious, and yet such basics are often overlooked, but can be crucial to college success.

College Fast Track (Essential Habits for Less Stress and More Success in College by Derrick Hibbard presents an organized package of habits, suggestions, and integral steps to conquering college work. His humor, tone, and deft writing demonstrate his credentials, and lend authority to his words. Learn from Derrick Hibbard and College Fast Track. Punch your ticket to successful studies.
