Tier 5 Unemployment Extension for 99ers: A 99er Could Face Financial Disaster Without Benefits Bill
Millions Are One Emergency Room Visit Away from Bankruptcy Without a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension
A Tier 5 extension would give families the bare minimum to survive. It would be enough to pay for food, or if they were lucky enough for food and a small apartment. Without it, families are turning to food stamps and other public benefits. This is hardly enough to survive.
99ers face financial disasters. They are only one hospital trip away from bankruptcy, and many have already foreclosed on their homes. Not providing individuals with the money they need to survive not only puts them in harm's way, it puts the nation's economy in harm's way as well.
If you look at CNN Money's "Where's My State Rank" tool, you will see that states with high unemployment rates also have high foreclosure rates. This makes perfect sense as people who do not have income sometimes don't have the resources available to pay bills.
So far there has been little coming out of Washington in terms of Tier 5 legislation pending. Only two Senators have spoken out publicly and they are Debbie Stabenow and Chuck Schumer. Neither have gotten the ball rolling, and therefore there are questions over whether or not they really plan on backing or sponsoring a measure in the near future.
Of course, the mid-term elections are coming up. After the Senate returns from summer recess, the focus is going to be on campaigning. Since all of the House and a good chunk of the Senate are up for re-election, there's little hope any measure will be passed before the lame duck sessions begin.
Those who desire a Tier 5 extension should vote wisely, choosing legislators who are likely to side with the millions of out-of-work Americans. Only when politicians side with our needs will anything get done.

Post a CommentOk, I am on the verge of losing my State Extended Benefits and then I will be done, I have thought about Tier 5, but the simple fact is the Government is not going to keep doing this., The new reality, is the only jobs are jobs no one wants, Late shifts, Split shifts, retail etc if you can't get those jobs then we are going to have to be innovative, because, the tiers will never end. these millions of people are not going to get their old jobs back, Taking a job at half your former pay or infact working as you did when you were 20, working 3 part time jobs with no insurance benefits maybe your only option to keep some money coming in. The loss of insurance benefits for those in the 50-70 age group (most of the 99ers)
is going to be devastating to the current health care system.
Most 99ers will have to accept a retail position or something for $8.00 an hours and when you have bills equaling your former pay this is going to be less than unemployment. Many 99ers are over 50 and can't work production lines anymore physically. Over 1/2 of the millions of 99ers where are on their last job over 10 years. Those jobs which needed those experiences are gone, and are not returning. So they must compete with the 20 somethings, this will leave a generation from 50-70 with no retirement and no income and no insurance. The exact generation you don't want in this position.
I am a 57 yr. old Veteran living with my 75 yr. old mother who has a very limited income. She is willing to sell her house and go into low income housing but the house isn't worth selling because she owes more on it than its worth. So we are over a barrel. How can our President, Senators and all politions live with themselves knowing how many 99ers are hurting? No money for gas to go look for a job, most owners of business companies are doing their own work so they don't have to pay someone else to do it...and reading the papers and listening to the news every day shows the out come! Bank robberies, smash and grab stores getting robbed, people killing anyone for a buck! Come on you dumb pollitions. Get off your backsides and see what's happening in the real world. Give ALL the unemployed a break. And to think most of them are veterans who helped save our country! What a way to pay them back.
i need the tier v i have been out of work for well over 2 years my unemployment ran out feb. 2010.i need help. food stamps are not enough.
I've worked in manufacturing for 27 years and believed that all I had to do was to be a good employee that works hard, be on the job all of my schedule days on time, make productivity with good quality product, and participate in all team activities, and then I would have a job until retirement. But alas, that was not the case, I got laid-off. I was told to return to school and learn new skills, and I did. I went in a whole different direction than manufacturing, healthcare. I earned an associate degree and certification in health information management with a 3.61 GPA. I have been unemployed since 2008.
Although I have earned a degree in another field, it’s very hard for me to find employment in my new field and manufacturing. In the healthcare field, I am told I don’t have any experience, and now manufacturing won’t hire me because of fear once I find something in my new field, I will leave the company. My unemployment benefits have been exhausted (99er). My bills are getting
The tier 5 should be passed. NO JOB+ NO MONEY = POVERTY. The Home owner that has lost their home has worked hard to qualify for their home though their sweat, blood ,tear. I am a 99er, and I never played at work. It is a disgrace to live in a county who has greater concerns for other counties than their own people. The War may end, but a new War will start on our American soil an worst type we will have to create more law enforcement. How long to you think the crime rate will remain at its current status? (not long it will rise people has lost, hope, their self esteem). Hungry people in your face begging you out looking for work and being approach by people asking for change . As a 99er I have searched the Market for work only to get 0 results I am not a loser, I am not looking for something for nothing. I have had 401 K, Saving, fancy car, great vacations you name it, What a disgrace that some mentality would be the 99ers individuals want FREE MONEY. That is a crazy thought. I
Does Congress or the President know how it feels to go hungry or have their utilities turned off or to lose everything they have worked hard for.Something need to be done.
The President and Congress need to start thinking of us Americans and their children and stop sending money to other countries. We need more unemployment or start creating mor jobs. What kind of future do our children have. Someday one of these kids will be president or work in Congress.
I worked for one company for 30 years. The reward for my loyalty was to get layed off cause my job was outsourced and the offer to stay on was over half less than what I was making. I went back to school but my new skills still have not helped me find work. I am approaching 60 so I am losing hope. What is 99 weeks compared to half my life contributing to the economy?
all i no is people are going to be hungry. kids are going to with out a home they dont care they have food and there kids have food what up with that
