Ties are an important part of a man's business wardrobe. The tie accents a man's suit and shirt. Ties express a man's personality. However, a man's tie should be conservative for a job interview.

Colors and Patterns

Stateuniversity.com states "do not wear a striped tie if you are wearing a striped suit or a striped shirt" as a rule of dressing. Solid colors work best. "Red communicates leadership and control." While a tie which is "blue projects calmness, composure, and organization" A solid red or solid blue tie would be great choices for an interview. Virginia Tech advises a candidate to "avoid fashion extremes, like character ties, in interviews." Ties should accent not clash with your suit, belt and shoes.

Styles and Materials

It is important to remember "tie styles come and go." One might make the best selection and go with a classic tie with a well tested design. Virginia Tech advises one should "select good quality silk ties." They also suggest a job seeker to investigate their industry of interest. "Notice what men in your industry wear on the job, at career fairs, at information sessions, when they meet with clients."

Ties should be classic, made of great material like silk, and should be a solid color. Blue and red are excellent tie colors to consider for a job interview. Fashion extremes and flashy colors should be avoided for a job interview. The tie should be clean and pressed. The tie should be tied neatly. The tie should help you portray confidence at the interview. The tie should accent your suit, shirt and shoes and not take away from your resume. Bow ties and clip on ties should be avoided for job interviews. Researching the organization you are interviewing can help you decide what tie to wear.

    I think you have excellent tastes mike. I agree about solid colors. I have one with pin stripes, but only my pastor (a Yankee fan) loves it! LOL

    I doubht that you have to limit the ties to a solid color. Stripes (if you don't have them on other items of clothing), or small dots, or other simple patterns could work. (By the way, on my last job, I wore a different tie every day and even maintained a blog about them.)
