Tiffany Glass Show at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

The Tiffany glass show at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in Richmond is the ideal way to celebrate the grand opening of its new McGlothlin Wing. These are some highlights from Tiffany: Color and Light and how to plan your visit to VMFA.

Highlights From the Tiffany Glass Show at VMFA in Richmond, Virginia:

The Tiffany glass show is the only U.S. stop for this major exhibition of more than 180 objects including the famous lamps and stained glass windows. Also included are examples of Louis Comfort Tiffany's early forays into Orientalist painting and other decorative objects. Exhibition highlights include eight newly restored windows from the Erskine and American United Church in Montreal. These life-size Biblical characters have never visited the U.S. before and it's enthralling to see them up close at eye level. On the lighter side, Tiffany's collaboration with Parisian art dealer Siegfried Bing yields a circus piece entitled The Dancer and the Five Penguins. If it looks like something Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec would do, you're right. It's Tiffany's rendering of a sketch commissioned from the famous Post-Impressionist of the Moulin Rouge.

Timed tickets are $15 for adults and free for VMFA members and children under 6. The museum is open 365 days a year and admission to the permanent collection is free. More information and images from the Tiffany glass show which closes August 15, 2010 are available online.

The Grand Re-Opening of VMFA:

In addition to the Tiffany glass show, there's much more to see at VMFA which re-opened May 1 after major renovations including a new third floor. Many pieces in the exhibit come from VMFA's own outstanding collection. Visit the rest of their Art Nouveau and Art Deco holdings, as well as the 5 Fabergé eggs and important works of American, British and French art.

The Jefferson Hotel Package for the Tiffany Glass Show:

The Jefferson Hotel offers an excellent value with its Tiffany Color and Light Package. With Richmond just a 2 hour drive from Washington DC, it's an ideal overnight or weekend getaway. Starting at $205, the package includes a deluxe room, free breakfast, valet parking and 2 tickets to the VMFA show. As always, the Jefferson provides free in-town car service. Enjoy southern classics at their Lemaire restaurant named one of the best new restaurants by Esquire. Just look up in the Palm Court Lobby to see more Tiffany glass. The stained-glass dome skylight retains nine of its 12 original Tiffany glass panes.

The Tiffany show is a brilliant way to welcome back visitors to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia.

I do like antique glass. I like stuff from the 1800's, mostly, although I'm also a fan of Art Deco.

Great to know about a show like this - too far away for me, alas.
