Tiger Fails Family Man Mickelson Wins 2010 Masters Golf Tournament Championship

Sheri Fresonke Harper
The final round of the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament had all the makings of excitement for any sports fan especially golfers. Phil Mickelson entered the final round needing to play catch up to leader Lee Westwood. The 2010 Masters Golf Tournament ended with a solid win for Phil. Phil Mickelson played the Masters Tournament wearing the pink ribbon that shows support for breast cancer because both his wife and his mother are undergoing treatment. Phil's game picked up yesterday with an eagle on a par 5 followed by a second eagle and then a just miss at a third. Today he followed up with a solid golf game that shows winners know how to handle adversity and keep on target for winning the match. Unlike last year's final round of the 2009 Masters Golf Tournament that ended in a three way sudden death match, Phil moved into the lead then held on clear until the end.

Tiger Woods let his emotions control his game again, letting his steady upward gains slide away when he three putted on hole 14 after a chip that left him unusually far from the cup. What is sad to see is his usual grousing over his failure to be perfect and only come in at 11 under par in his attempt to win the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament. Most of us amateurs would be in heaven with such results.

Korean golfers Anthony Kim and K. J. Choi wowed the crowd many times. The two ended up swapping positions in the final 9 holes, with Anthony Kim ending the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament with the lowest score for the day at 65 to come in third. K. J. Choi played a nearly perfect game but ending up tied with Tiger Woods after bogeying hole 13 after a weak chip out of the sand.

The leader starting round 4 of the Masters Golf Tournament, Lee Westwood reputedly nearly gave up golf until a coach talked him into working out regularly at the gym. He lost his lead to Phil when he bogeyed for the second time on hole 9. He came back to within two strokes on the sixteenth and by then Tiger Woods had the crowd cheering his final par. The crowd at the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament final was so appreciative, Lees Westwood and Phil Mickelson waited to complete the seventeenth hole until all the noise died down on the eighteenth. Lee Westwood came back into contention with Phil Mickelson when he birdied the seventeenth hole. Everyone held their breath as he attempted another birdie on the eighteenth that would have led to two way sudden death match like the 2009 Masters Golf Tournament. He missed by mere inches.

Then it was Phil Mickelson's turn to putt. He sank his birdie and finished the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament with an awesome 16 under par performance. But what caught the television viewing audiences' heart was when he hugged his wife, tears dropping from his eyes, and then his kids, sign of a true champion in my mind.

Great review but the fact that Mickelson is a family man is irrelevant. I am so sick of the Tiger scandal.

I rooted for two things all weekend... Phil to win... and Tiger to lose... I love the way Phil plays and more importantly the type of person he is.. great job Phil!

I can't say that I'm unhappy Tiger didn't win. Besides Mickelson deserved it. It's been a long time coming.

nice report, I don't watch golf and could care less about Tiger.
