Tiger or Phil?

Who Will Take the Masters

Statsman
Tiger Woods or Phil Mickleson? Which one will win this year's Masters? The two have combined to win five of the last six Masters, with Woods winning in 2001, 2002 and 2005, and Mickleson in 2004 and last year. The only other winner in that span was Mike Weir in 2003.

Even though the two have dominated the Tournament over the last six years, they have never really competed directly with each other. When one would win, the other would not be in contention. Leaving golf fans to wonder what would happen this year if they were in contention together?

Can you imagine Woods and Mickleson playing together in the last pairing on Sunday ahead of the field by 5 strokes? And then still being tied as they march into Amen Corner? Golf fans would be ecstatic, even as they would find it a little difficult to breathe from the tension. CBS would be even more ecstatic, as such a showdown would promise huge ratings for Golf's biggest Tournamnet.

If your handicapping the Masters you must give the edge to Tiger. He has won 9 of the last 11 Tour events he has entered, and has won three of the last six Masters. He's currently a 3/2 favorite to win the Tournament in the Sportsbooks. But Mickleson comes in having already won this year at Pebble Beach, and having won the Masters in two out of the last three years, including last year. He's currently the third betting choice at 7-1, just behind the field at 6-1.

Can anybody else win this year? Of course, this is golf. You only need to get hot for a couple days and play well for two others. But the oddsmakers currently have just two other players at under 20-1, Vijay Singh at 14-1, and Ernie Els at 16-1. Singh won the Masters in 2000, while Els has yet to win a Masters.

The record for Masters wins all time is six, held by Jack Nicklaus. A win by Tiger this year would put him just one behind the Golden Bear. Can he do it? Or will Mickleson go back to back and win again this year?

Will the two of them be able to live up to all the hype and come charging down Amen Corner Sunday afternoon together in contention? That would be something to see.

Tune in beginning Thursday to find out. Live coverage begins at 4pm Thursday and Friday on USA Network, and then switches over to CBS for the weekend beginning at 3:30pm on Saturday, and 2:30pm on Sunday. For the first time this year, CBS will also be offering live video streams of the Tournament on the internet, including continuous streams from Amen Corner. To watch for free go to either CBS Sportsline or the official Masters website.

I like them both but my husband is a Tiger fan so I have to "pretend" I'm rooting just for him.

Sounds like it will be a great year, no matter who wins. For history's sake, I'm rooting for Tiger.
