Caddie Steve Williams speaks out about the Tiger Woods scandal

After more than two weeks of media hype and mistress revelations about the scandalous behaviour of Tiger Woods, his Caddie, Steve Williams, has spoken publicly about "the two weeks from hell". With Woods announcing that he will be taking an indefinite break from golf, Williams has issued a statement distancing himself from Woods's off-course antics. He has also had to fend off media speculation about whether he was in any way involved in the scandal.

An article published today (13 December 2009 AEDST) in the Sydney Morning Herald includes this statement by Steve Williams:

''I live in New Zealand, I travel to and from New Zealand to caddie for Tiger Woods. I am not with him 24/7,'' he said. ''Whilst I am a very good friend of his ... I don't know what he does off the course."

''His indiscretions have probably been when he wasn't playing. When he is not competing, I am back in New Zealand. I have no knowledge of what he is doing. Yes, I talk to him on the phone; ask him how his practice is going, how he is hitting the ball, how his family is, but I don't know what he is doing. Just like he doesn't know what I am doing.''

This disclosure puts to rest any speculation that someone so close to Tiger Woods had any knowledge of the golfing star's philandering. Williams further stated that if he is ever axed by Woods, it will be the end of the caddying career which has elevated him into New Zealand's sporting rich list. The statement by Williams concludes with the assertion that:

''I have always stated that my last caddie job will be caddying for Tiger. I am committed to him. I understand he needs a break to sort his personal stuff out. And I will be there for him when he wishes to return to play.''

Steve Williams - New Zealand speedway car racing enthusiast

When Steve Williams is not assisting Tiger Woods with his golf tournaments, he is caught up each weekend from October to April competing in both Saloon and Super Saloon car racing, often at the same meet. In a normal season, Steve will compete in approximately twenty-five meetings.

This varied lifestyle gives complete credibility to the fact that Steve Williams would not have time to be involved in the private life of Tiger Woods.

Discretion, scruples and fidelity seem to often be a serious misfit with celebrity!

Good article. I imagine life has been miserable for all those close to the Woods family.
