Tiger Woods Cost of Divorce Could Be Huge - But, There Are Other Famous and Costly Divorces

The cost of a divorce, which is still at this point being rumored, for Tiger Woods could easily run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Supposedly Elin Nordegren, Tiger Wood's wife, has met with some very high-powered divorce attorneys and weighing her options about divorcing Tiger. It is estimated that Tiger Wood's net worth is about $600 million, some part of which Elin would be entitled to in the case of a divorce.

There is a pre-nuptial agreement in the Tiger Woods and Elin marriage and its contents, or recent modifications to those contents, still remain unknown. And, of course, there are the two small children, Sam, 2 and Charlie, 10 months that will have to financially cared for in any eventual settlement.

So while many people are trying to determine just what is might cost Tiger Woods in the case of divorce, a little perspective on expensive divorces might be a good idea. Some light research shows that many other high-profile celebrities have gone through very expensive divorces also.

Steven Spielberg's first marriage to actress Amy Irving had what was ruled an invalid pre-nuptial agreement. So back in 1989, yes it was twenty years ago now, Amy Irving received $100 million in the divorce settlement. The lesson in this settlement: don't write your pre-nuptial on a napkin.

Melissa Mathison, Harrison Ford's first wife, received around $85 million in their divorce.

In the infamous Madonna and Guy Richie divorce, Guy walked away with $76 million. The Material Girl and Guy had been married just eight years when their split was announced. In 2008 the divorce was finalized and Madonna became a single mother of three children, and had $76 million less in her checking account.

Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva were happily married for sixteen years, in Hollywood that is a very long time. But when their divorce was made known and it was all over, Cindy Silva walked away with an estimated $80 million.

The ill-fated James Cameron and Linda Hamilton's marriage lasted only 18 months. In the end Linda Hamilton had a divorce and an estimated $50 million.

One final example is of Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills that were married for a short four years. The resulting media frenzy on the break-up and all the really ugly accusations thrown around during the custody battle finally resulted in Heather Mills receiving $38.5 million lump sum and $70,000 annually for the support of their child.

So Tiger and Elin are not the first, and won't be the last celebrity couple to break up in the limelight of the media and under the unending public scrutiny. But they will get through this eventually and we, the watching public, will move on to the next scandal.
