Tiger Woods Extends Lead to Four at Doral
Behind Solid Play and Good Putting, Woods Puts Distance Between Himself and the Field
When faced with the course's most difficult hole, the testy 18th, Woods made sure that no one would be getting any closer. Only eleven birdies had been made there before Woods arrival and he nearly made it twelve. His drive was long and true, flying dead down the middle of the fairway. His approach shot landed very softly and around eight feet from the hole. Only a slight misread on that birdie putt kept the lead at four.
Woods now stands at 11-under for the tournament, standing four shots better than his next closest competitors. If there's one thing Woods has been good at during his spectacular career, it's been in holding a final round lead. He's led or shared the lead a total of 41 times in his career. His record in those situations is 38-3. None of those three losses came when Woods held a lead of four shots or greater.
On this windy day, no one was up to giving Tiger Woods a challenge. Ernie Els looked good early, but faltered late in the round. His 18th hole double-bogey cemented a disappointing round. Spaniard Sergio Garcia brought some challenge, but could not make enough puts to come close to Woods. After three-putting for bogey on the final hole, Garcia shook his head in apparent disgust. He stands seven shots behind Woods.
The two closest challengers to Woods are Brett Wetterich and Nick O'Hern, who shot 67 and 66 respectively on Saturday. Wetterich fired he five-under 67 and will join Woods in the final group on Sunday afternoon. O'Hern, who knocked off Woods at this month's World Golf Championship, shot a 66 and stands five shots back.
After finishing his round, Tiger took questions from the media for a short while before heading a few miles across town to take in a tennis match. His good friend and fellow superstar Roger Federrer was scheduled to play in a second round match. Tiger will look to take his confident and calm demeanor into yet another final round with the lead. If tomorrow's like any of his previous conquests, no one else needs to even show up.
