Tiger Woods Rumors: The Accident, the Affair, the Allegations

If you weren't confused enough about all the convolutions of the Tiger Woods affair / not affair rumors and car accident episode, there now seems to be some reason to suspect that the Tiger Woods' altercation and subsequent window-bashing incident was not only over an alleged affair but said affair might not have been so alleged after all. TMZ reported that Tiger Woods told a friend that his wife "went ghetto" on him and that he now had to make a trip down to a jewelers to get a "Kobe Special" (an expensive ring). Rumors have a way of taking on a life of their own and, just as Tiger Woods' alleged mistress, Rachel Uchitel, lawyered up and shut up, Tiger Woods and his wife decided to shut up and remain shut in. And when facts are in short supply, rumor has a way of taking over.

Thus far, nothing about the car accident outside the Tiger Woods home in Windermere, Florida is known for certain -- except what is written on the Windermere Police report that was observable by the responding officers. The causes are as yet unknown. TMZ reported that Tiger Woods confided to a source that he had argued with his wife, she had attacked him and then chased his vehicle with a golf club, ultimately smashing out a window and "distracting" him enough to wreck. The initial police report stated that Tiger Woods hit a fire hydrant and a tree with his vehicle and no alcohol was involved. He was transported to nearby Health Central Hospital.

And that was the sum of it.

Everything else seems to be a matter of speculation and third party information thus far. The affair with Rachel Uchitel is alleged, not a substantiated fact. The rumors that Tiger Woods fought with his wife before the car accident come from a sources either at the accident or who claim to have spoken with Tiger Woods later. Even what the married couple may have been fighting about is a matter of complete conjecture.

Rachel Uchitel, the alleged mistress, has publicly denied any affair with Tiger Woods, although she admits having met him and seeing him a couple of times (non-romantically) since May. Tiger Woods has not made a public statement about the rumors concerning his alleged affair. Nor has he issued a public statement (nor is there any substantiated witnessed statement by Woods) regarding the car accident or the causes of said accident.

However, Tiger Woods did write on his personal website that the accident was entirely his fault, that it was a "private matter," and offered a blanket statement about the current media hype surrounding him: "Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible."

But what about Tiger Woods and his wife not receiving Florida authorities for follow-up questioning and the two different and conflicting reports filed with Windermere Police and the Florida Highway Patrol by Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren? Although they may be facts, they do nothing to substantiate the rumors. Turning authorities away and/or refusing to talk about a given subject does not mean that those grown silent are hiding anything or obstructing an investigation. They are simply avoiding speaking on the subject.

But it looks suspicious... And people will talk...

So what does the public truly know about the Tiger Woods accident / affair? It is known that: there was a car accident involving the world's foremost golfer, photos of the car accident, the audiotape of the 911 call, eyewitness account of Tiger Woods unconscious in the street, that there were lacerations on Tiger Woods' face, a police report with details of the results of the car accident and Woods' subsequent trip to a nearby medical facility, Tiger Woods' mea culpa concerning the accident, his ambiguous blanket statement about everything else, his alleged mistress' denial that she is his mistress, and...

And nothing else.

Everything else, from what caused the accident to whether or not there was an altercation, from whether or not the altercation was over an alleged affair and even the alleged affair itself thus far is rumor, speculation, insinuation, extrapolation, and unsubstantiated innuendo. And that is not to mention the anonymous or unnamed sources, who could have been misquoted, mistaken, lying or even nonexistent. Rumors, rumors, and more rumors...

And there is the likelihood that the Tiger Woods incident might just remain mostly rumors as well. Florida authorities are now attempting to obtain warrants for possible evidence that might help piece together the puzzle but what might be gained from those warrants might end up being the source of more speculation and rumor, especially if that evidence is ambiguous (medical records) or nonexistent (Tiger Woods' home video surveillance footage).

And nobody is talking...
