Tiger Woods Will Play at the Masters; Is He Selfish or Not?

Are They Just Beating a Dead Horse?

Tiger Woods will play at the Masters for 2010 as reported at his official website. "The Masters is where I won my first major, and I view this tournament with great respect. After a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I'm ready to start my season at Augusta, " says Woods.

Tiger's huge infidelity scandal kept him out of the golfing circuit for four months. Is it a good idea for Tiger Woods to play at the Masters for 2010?

After a four month hiatus, Tiger Woods announced that he will play at the 2010 Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club in April 2010. As Woods reported at his site, he respects the Masters, which many can understand since he has won four green jackets so far.

Coming back to golf in April allows Tiger Woods to get back in the game and back to business as usual. Although many people in the United States, and the rest of the world for that matter, disapprove of the great golfers extramarital affairs, Woods has acknowledged publicly that he was wrong, that he is in therapy, and that he is working it out with his wife.

Many would agree that an announcement of returning to golf begins to put the scandal to rest and allows Tiger to move on to the next chapter of his life. If Tiger Woods does well at the Masters, talk about his personal life will dissolve, because few will care anymore. The public has short memories when it comes to winners. As reported at The Daily Telegraph, the Masters is the perfect place to get away from hecklers and paparazzi and entertainment news reporters due to it's controls on who can be there and who can't.

Will Tiger get lots of sponsors again? It can happen. He might even take on sponsors who may crawl back after dumping him when he was down.

Some have declared that Tiger Woods playing at the Masters for 2010 is selfish. Are they right?

Although some are not surprised that Tiger Woods is back in the game, there are some who are. At Woods' press conference in February, he did not indicate when he would return to the game, but said it would be someday. Someday has arrived in March, just weeks after the press conference. "All that halting guff about maybe returning to golf one day was just a great big fib," said The Daily Telegraph's Mark Reason as reported at 101 ESPN.

Others have criticized Woods by calling him selfish. Said Daily Mirror's Oliver Holt as reported at 101 ESPN, "How typical of the man to hijack the world's most famous golf tournament. How could he turn Augusta into a circus like this? Does his vanity know no limits?"

However, are Reason and Holt and those who agree with them just beating a dead horse? The question must be asked - if not now, when? If Tiger Woods is ready to return to golf, why shouldn't he?

Golfers have gone on record that they are happy to see Tiger Woods back, as some reported at this YouTube video. Tiger is the best golfer in the world and having the best golfer play elevates your game. Shouldn't serious golfers welcome the challenge?

When a public figure says his family is the most important thing in his life, as Tiger has said repeatedly, it is the public's business when it turns out to be a lie. And please, we're talking about Tiger, not Bill Clinton. And, when we were talking about Bill Clinton, we weren't talking about JFK. Nothing of importance will ever get resolved if the core discussion is constantly diluted by pointing to others.

Business is business. And as Patricia statd below, this is not OUR business. Interesting report.

Once again, NOT OUR BUSINESS! I'm sure he and his wife have discussed this.

Too bad it gets "announced" in a way that makes it seem like he needs somebody's approval to play. LOL. If cheating men couldn't continue to earn a living, a lot of their girlfriends (esp celebrities) would magically disappear.

It's not selfish of him. It could be more selfish of all the golfers who never stopped playing yet are having affairs??

I still love Tiger...now we know he's human like us.

Yes Rick, I agree that we should all just get on with it.

This is serious getting to an "oh, who cares point." The cynical (but correct) have noted that fan behavior at the Masters is more controlled than at any other tournament. Accident? Duh.

Selfish? No. I am happy for him. I hope he is able to bounce back and things can be normal or at least close to it again. Great article Jolie.

I hear ya. When Pres. Clint cheated on his wife with Monica (and finished his term btw) he wasn't selfish for being the president. He was selfish for cheating on his wife, though. PV party though lol.
