Tightwad Tip: Make Your Own Croutons!

Homemade Crouton Recipe Using Leftover Bread

Beth Blue
I often have 1/3rd of a loaf of Italian or French bread leftover. After a day it gets hard and it is only good for garlic bread - but not enough for the whole family, so forget it. I don't need the kids fighting over garlic bread. There are so many more important things to argue about, like who's looking at whom...

So I make croutons.

They are probably healthier than store bought. They are definitely cheaper, and way tastier... We eat a salad here almost every day!

Homemade Croutons
Recipe

Slice day old loaf of bread.

Spread butter or olive oil over the sliced bread

Sprinkle with Italian seasoning or garlic powder, or seasoning salt

Cut the slices into cubes. I like large, restaurant sized croutons.

Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet.

Bake at 300 for about 10 minutes, until crisp ...

watch closely or the croutons will burn.

Cool

Add to a salad, or store in a zip top bag for later use.

Maybe sneak a few all by themselves, mmm....

Enjoy!

My mother used to save stale bread and grind it into breadcrumbs! I still do that. Croutons are now added to the bread recycling list. Thanks!

I, too, like to eat croutons on my salad. They can get expensive - thanks for the money-saving recipe!
