Tillman's Roadhouse in Dallas Takes Comfort Food to the Next Level

Tillman's Roadhouse in Dallas has earned its reputation as one of the best restaurants in the city without fancy advertising or creating a buzz among elite foodies. As the anchor dining establishment in the Bishop Arts District, Tillman's won fans by providing great food with outstanding service in a lively atmosphere.

Tillman's was established back in 1992 by Ricky and Sara Tillman in the Bishop Arts District in north Oak Cliff, well before it became a popular destination for restaurants. Back then, the restaurant stood out by giving comfort food an upscale twist. The atmosphere could best be described as a real-life Cheers, and Tillman's soon gained a large following from locals in the surrounding neighborhoods, as well as from a loyal group of downtown workers who found their location convenient and the food irresistible.

After Ricky Tillman passed away, Sara became the face of the restaurant, often greeting diners as they entered and thanking them as they left. As the Bishop Arts District gained in notoriety, Tillman's became the most popular restaurant in the area and Sara came to represent the personal touch that sets the District and its businesses apart.

Several years ago, Tillman's underwent a renovation of its decor and its menu. While many of the dishes may have changed, the concept did not. Tillman's remains a place where Southern comfort food received top-drawer treatment. The atmosphere remains inviting and warm; the woody decor is much brighter than the previous version, and resembles a chic hunting lodge.

Diners and critics (in both local and national publications) rave about the food. After visiting, even singer Kelly Clarkson tweeted that she loved the food. The menu choices run the spectrum and many feature a unique turn. The Venison Chili Frito Pie is a personal favorite, and sides like the white cheddar mac-and-cheese and the "coffee goat cheese gristmill grits" should be on everyone's culinary bucket list. The appetizers are well worth sampling, including my favorite, the "Trio of Fries." For dessert, a serving of gourmet smores will have you singing campfire songs.

Tillman's certainly doesn't slouch on the "Roadhouse" side of its name. Steaks, ribs, and pork chops all get first class preparation. The Chipotle BBQ Smoked Ribs are outstanding, and if you come for lunch, the cheesesteak sandwich won't knock you out for the rest of the day.

Tillman's home cooking and friendly atmosphere has made it my first choice when I want to take friends or family out for a great meal. Tillman's formula has been such a success, they've taken their act on the road. A second location has opened in Ft. Worth, with much the same menu and the same great service.
