Tim Tebow: Biggest Draft Steal of the 2010 NFL Draft?

Rebecca Gore
Each year the NFL draft is one of New York Cities biggest events, with NFL legends attending and even some celebrities. Among all questions that get raised during and after the draft is "Who is the biggest draft steal?" This year the 2010 draft offered a lot of these questions with very talented players from college going late in the draft. Texas Longhorns Heisman Candidate Quarterback Colt McCoy wasn't drafted until the 3rd round by the Cleveland Browns, Alabama Crimson Tide Defensive Tackle stand out Terrance Cody also known as Mount Cody wasn't drafted until the 25th pick of the 2nd round. There is yet one player who was a college superstar that created a lot of buzz around him leading up to the draft, this player is none other than Tim Tebow Quarterback of the Florida Gators. Now I was able to attend my first NFL draft at the Radio City Music hall in New York City and noticed the drama unfold as Tim Tebow was selected as the 25th pick of the 1st round. And In this Article you will learn why I believe Tim Tebow will be the biggest steal of the 2010 NFL draft.

Now any fan of college football knows who Tim Tebow is but for those who may not be big fans of college football a little history on Tim Tebow is that he was the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy, which is the NCAA highest and most prestigious award that only the best of the best in college football obtain. Tim Tebow as a Quarterback rushed for more Touchdowns than NCAA and NFL legend Hershel Walker as well as being the first college football player to rush and pass for more than 20 touchdowns in a single season.{CBSSports.com} These are just a few accomplishments that Tim Tebow accomplished in his 4 year college football career, but for those like myself that had a chance to watch him play in the swamp down in Gainesville, Florida it was truly a treat to watch. But certain questions now have arrived around Tebow asking can he play as well in the NFL as he did in College. I have been a college football fan all my life and in fact this article is mostly coming from my own experience and knowledge.

To the question of Tebow's talent and playing in the NFL I would like to take you back in time a bit to a former San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Steve Young. Steve was a running Quarterback much like Tim Tebow who in the NFL developed his skill over to a balanced QB. Steve Young who is now a NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback did not start off like this he was a Tampa Bay Buccaneer back up or 2nd stringer for the start of his career before being traded to the 49ers were he sat behind NFL Legend Joe Montana. {CBSSports.com} Now one can assume that sitting behind a Great like Joe Montana he learned and developed his skill which is always a plus for any young player like Steve Young was at the time. Tim Tebow will not have the same luxury as he will be sitting behind to experienced yet still young Quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn.

This for me however doesn't mean Tebow wont mature as an NFL quarterback, with many NFL teams adapting the "Wildcat" style offense into their game, This style Offense is were Tim Tebow will Excel at. With some developing of his throwing skill Its my belief that Tim Tebow will mature into a well rounded NFL Quarterback, how well is up to Tebow himself and how determined he is to become what every draft pick this year hopes to be and that is a NFL great. Getting there will take work but after this past 2009-2010 NCAA season a lot of us saw the toughness of Tim Tebow in their game against Kentucky were he suffered a Concussion and yet was back 2 weeks later in Florida's next game against rival L.S.U. {Louisiana State University}

Now as far as being this year's biggest draft steal being drafted late in the 1st round at the 25th pick by the Denver Bronco's, I believe he will be a huge steal going that late in the 1st round. Tim Tebow is a Game changer and has already proven he is a solid leader, as he lead the Florida Gator's to the BCS {Bowl Championship Series} National Championship in the 2008-2009 season. When running a pro style system at the 2010 senior bowl we saw Tim Tebow struggle on his elongated delivery and his footwork when passing. {{ESPN.com}}This is still something that can be corrected and fixed while developing his mechanics in the pros. This Young Man still has the experience playing in high stakes games, and playing under pressure to win. Many arguments can be raised about many other players in this years draft, a lot of college football critics and fans may believe other players such as Colt McCoy who was a Heisman candidate in 2010 going late in the 3rd round being a huge steal. This is something I can't argue Colt is a very fantastic player and it's my belief he will see playing time with the Cleveland Browns sooner than Tim Tebow will see with the Denver Bronco's.

However if in 5-6 years we look back at the 2010 draft I believe Tim Tebow will shine in everybody's eyes as the best player drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. Not to mention Tim Tebow will be coached in the NFL by the same man that coached 3 time super bowl winning quarterback Tom Brady , and that being Denver Bronco's Head Coach Josh McDaniels who was the Offensive Coordinator for the New England Patriots prior to the 2008-2009 NFL season. Tim Tebow already has the ability out of the pocket and scrambling with the ball as well as making defenders miss on the tackles, which is something that very few NFL Quarterbacks have the ability to do. With a little guidance from Denver's Head Coach Josh McDaniels I believe Tim Tebow will evolve as a true Great in the NFL.

Whether you love or hate Tim Tebow any true fan of college football can not dismiss the fact that Tim Tebow as a collegiate quarterback was one of the best in NCAA history. Will he have the same success in the NFL as he did in college? This is something that only time will be able to answer, but as a lifelong football fan of both college and pro I am looking forward to watching and enjoying the journey for Tim Tebow as he goes on a new quest to evolve as a Great NFL quarterback.
