Tim Tebow: The NFL Prospect

Darren Heath
Tim Tebow, one of the greatest college football players of this generation, if not ever, is trying to make it into the NFL as a quarterback. A lot of people are wondering what will happen to him at the next level, after four years of dominating the college football scene as the starting quarterback at Florida. The belief about Tim Tebow seems to be that he is a great athlete, leader and "character guy" but that his abilities at the quarterback position don't translate well for NFL success. Tebow is out to prove the naysayers wrong. At this weekend's NFL draft combine, Tebow was very impressive. Tebow ran the 40 yard dash in 4.72 seconds and he posted a 38 inch vertical leap. All these things bode well for Tebow and certainly help his chances for rising in the draft.

Nevertheless, the big question is the arm. Tebow can throw. However, people are concerned about his throwing motion. His wide, three-quarter delivery is something that bothers scouts, as they believe this could create problems when facing opposing defenses and the pass rush. His delivery is slow which worries teams because he may not be able to get the ball out quickly and therefore take a lot of sacks. Secondly, the low delivery makes it more likely to have the ball get batted down by defensive linemen. Tebow did not throw at the combine, preferring to wait for his pro day. The other concern regarding Tebow is his ability to take snaps under center, since during his playing days at Florida he worked out of the shotgun.

There is a belief that Tebow can be converted to another position if he doesn't make it at quarterback. Some believe that he could be a good fullback while others see potential as a tight end. There are still others who believe in his leadership ability and think that he is worth drafting for that alone.

Tebow wants to be a quarterback however. And he is doing all he can to impress the NFL, working on a new throwing motion that he will unveil on his pro day at the University of Florida on March 17. He is waiting because he wants more time to be prepared for the scouts and thus improve his chances of being a higher pick.

In his time at Florida, Tim Tebow enjoyed rock star status. He was surely the most famous college football player in America. He won a Heisman Trophy and was invited to the ceremony three times as a finalist. He also won two national championships for the Gators. Whatever happens to Tebow, he has already had a memorable football career that most players would only dream of. Tim Tebow will get drafted. He is a talented player. The real question is, how high will he go and will he be able to fulfill his dream of playing quarterback in the NFL?
