Timber Falls: A Poor Rehash of Other Horror Film Offerings

Mark Murphy
Mike and Sheryl are a young couple looking to get away from the stress of the city and enjoy some camping. During their trip in mountains of West Virginia, Sheryl is abducted and held by a trio of unhinged religious zealots. In the process of rescuing her, Mike finds himself nabbed by the same group. Can this horror film produce screams or is Timber Falls just another slasher flick?

Needing to get away from their high-stress lives in Washington D.C., Mike and Sheryl decide to go camping up in the mountains of West Virginia. As they wind their way into the hills, they meet a park ranger who advises them on the best sites to camp. On the way to the campsite, the couple encounters a woman who encourages them to head up to Timber Falls since the scenery is so beautiful. Mike and Sheryl decide to follow the woman's advice and soon find themselves in Timber Falls, but not before a brief and uncomfortable encounter with a small group of local hillbillies.

The young couple bed down for the night. The next morning, Sheryl is grabbed by a hideously misshapen man while bathing in the lake. When Mike discovers that she's gone, he goes looking for her. Without giving away too many details, he soon finds himself in the clutches of Ida, the same woman who led him to Timber Falls. There he finds Sheryl and uncovers an unholy plot hatched by Ida, her husband Clyde (another park ranger) and her brother Deacon, the disfigured man who snatched Sheryl. Ida and Clyde want a child but cannot conceive, as the dozen bell jars full of dead fetuses can attest to. The deranged couple plan to force Mike and Sheryl to conceive so Clyde can take the baby and kill them. This is where a bad movie just gets worse as it devolves into your standard torture-porn horror movie. Mike and Sheryl undergo a series of different tortures to force them into having sex.

The movie takes the same, worn plots of several other slasher films and puts them all together in yet another blood bath. Our protagonists ignore even the most obvious warnings and blunder through the film, while Ida and her crew go about burning, torturing and slicing anyone in their way. Even the most ardent horror fans will agree that this film offers nothing new to the audience. Director Tony Giglio has taken a promising horror film and turned it into a re-run of any number of other films already available. While the film isn't too bad, it isn't too good either. Unless you're the type of person that has to see every horror movie released, you're better off passing this one up.
