Time to Let Anger Against Heat, LeBron James Go

Basketball Season is Over

COMMENTARY | The NBA Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat left a bad taste in many fans' mouths. And of all things, the anger and vitriolic behavior continue. I'd like to weigh in on the situation.

As background, let me simply say that Dallas beat Miami in a series where Miami was heavily favored. The Heat isn't liked in general, and some of the players' antics, such as Lebron James and Dwayne Wade making fun of Dirk Nowitzki's sinus infection, were considered crude.

The player who gets the most negative attention is James. When he left Cleveland to come to Miami, he made a big deal out of it and fans got disgusted.

I want to try to put the playoffs in perspective

What we watch today is nowhere near what the game of basketball was intended to be. It was created by Dr.James Naismith as a sport that could be played in the winter. There were no video games in 1891.

The reference material shows the 13 rules that Naismith established, and while it is understandable that some things might change, the game of basketball was never intended to be physical -- it was intended to be a team sport where the emphasis was on passing, shooting skill and team speed.

If you watched the games played by Dallas and Miami, you watched hard fouls, "jawing," "flopping" and poor sportsmanship -- and that was on both sides of the ball. By the way, if you don't know what "flopping" is, you may see James doing it here.

I offer the reader a couple of pieces of information:

Certainly pro basketball is a million-dollar industry, yet at the end of the day it is a game.\James may be able to shoot a ball but he can't cure cancer or institute world peace. For that matter, neither can any of the Mavericks. I suggest basketball is not an enjoyable distraction from everyday life if it leaves you angry.

Finally I think the basketball world is expecting too much from James. He was born to a 16-year-old unmarried mother. Further, his mother, for whatever reason, made poor choices about boyfriends-- Lebron was routinely around convicts and drug users. Because his mother had no education, she worked at low-paying jobs and often was unemployed. James did not make friends in grade school because he was embarrassed about his home life.

James went to the NBA from high school rather than going to college and getting a little more emotional maturity.

It is obvious James establishes his worth on the basketball court. How can fans across the country expect him to be able to handle the disappointment of major losses and incredible fan disapproval in a way that is going to look good to the press?

Basketball season is over. It's time to let it all go.
