Time Management for Busy People

Ryan Barnes
Time management skills are extremely important to every entrepreneur. Surprisingly, many of them are very bad at managing their time. They think that they need to cram as much as possible into everyday. They become habitual clock watchers. Although there is nothing wrong with watching the clock and trying to be as efficient as possible, it is a hard way of life. An easier way of life is to learn the skills of a good time manager.

So the first thing that you need to learn is how to make a plan. It is the most important aspect of good time management. There is no right way or wrong way to plan. I personally like to take a few moments around noon to just think about what I want to accomplish for the rest of the day. It works well for me because it gives me a nice little break. I don't formally write down my plans. Other people are neurotic and plan out every 15 minutes of everyday. Your personal style will dictate how much time and effort you put into planning.

For somebody that hasn't made very many plans, it is a great idea to write out your plan. Putting it to paper makes it more real. You may be surprised at how much better you can use your time if you make and review a plan often. However I must caution you not to micro-manage your time. If you do that you most likely will end up very unhappy.
The next thing to remember is that your plan is not set in stone. Be flexible. Every once in a while a good buddy might call you up and want to go out for lunch. Effective time management is about doing what you want when you want to do it. You may need to postpone the lunch to fit around a meeting, and that is okay. If the call was truly unexpected your friend will understand if you ask to eat at one instead of at noon. Or you can tell him that you will have lunch with him but you need to be back at your office by a certain time. Life is too short; you should do what you want.

Time management is important because it allows you to make choices. Your plan will allow you to see possibilities in your day. You will begin to develop a sixth sense for opportunities. You can squeeze a conversation into your day. You can have some fun out on the town. The possibilities are endless and planning makes that possible.
