Time Management: How to Make the Most of Your Study Time - Part 2

Heide Lynne Canlas
After using your schedule for a few weeks, you might find that there are several areas you have to adjust. Don't be shy to do so. The schedule will work more effectively if it is as much personalized as possible. Remember that you made the schedule to make your life easier and not the other way around. It becomes pointless if it does not serve your purpose.

To make study time even more of a breeze, here are some time management tips you can use:

1. Take time after class to review your notes. This is the best time to do so since the lecture is still fresh in your mind. Reviewing your notes immediately will help you retain and process the information easier during actual studying.

2. Choose your study place wisely. Find a place where you are least likely to be interrupted or distracted. Interruptions and distractions will prevent you from getting quality study time. Choose a place where you can be relaxed, but not too relaxed that you might fall asleep.

3. Start off with the difficult subjects. Study the difficult subjects first and save the easy ones later. This would mean that you won't work as hard on the difficult subjects because your mind is still fresh and focused. Many student will find this hard especially if they have the habit of delaying or avoiding unpleasant tasks.

4. Use time-outs. Scatter ten-minute breaks throughout your study time. You can read a poem or do some relaxation techniques. This break will relieve some of the pressure, yet at the same time, it will keep your mind processing the information it received.

5. Multitask whenever possible. Got less time? Do 2 things at once if you can like reciting your notes while doing the laundry or reading a book while waiting in line. You can also listen to audio tapes of lectures while commuting or make a run-down of your schedule in your mind while taking a shower.

6. Prioritize. Don't try to do everything at once. The strain of trying to do so will prevent you from concentrating on the task at hand. Make three separate lists of things you have to do. Write down the things that you have to do within the week on the first list, the things that must be done next week on the second list, and the things the must be done within the month on the third list.

7. Sleep and eat properly. Don't sacrifice sleeping and eating time to study. This will make your study time less productive. Lack of sleep makes you lethargic and unable to concentrate. You must also eat a healthy and balanced diet for your mind to function properly.

8. Relax and socialize. There is more to life than studying. Don't deprive yourself of the company of your friends because you need to study. Proper time management is about making room in your life for everything that is important to you and that means having a life.
