1. Check Your Email Twice a Day
Often times people are very proactive about checking their email. They may feel that they need to check it every hour. This causes minutes to be wasted logging on and looking at your emails. Even worse is when you are always logged on to your email account. Some may argue that this is effective; however, I argue that it serves as a distraction. My recommendation is to check your email once in the morning and then once again in the early evening. Read the emails carefully when you do this and respond. If people you know feel you need to check email more often, let them know by perhaps using an auto responder.
2. Plan Out your Schedule
It is possible to electronically plan out your schedule. Services such as Google allow this to be very easy. Many college students find it effective to add their classes and activities in to their schedules. Then add events as they occur. This can allow you to see when you will have time to spend on homework and free time. This is also effective at work and can allow you to put meetings in your schedule so you know what is coming up.
3. Plan out Exercise and Eating
Exercising and eating is an important part of life. It is important to keep this as part of your schedule so that you know when these times will be occurring. You can of course vary these times as you fit, but it is a good idea to get an idea of how long it will take you to exercise and eat breakfast. This can help you budget your time elsewhere.
4. Avoid Heavy Use of Text and Instant Messaging
While these two services are very popular, they can be very time consuming. It is a lot easier to talk verbally for the majority of people. Therefore, if you want to discuss something with a friend or colleague you should schedule a time to talk over the phone or in person. It is better to use Text and Messaging for shorter notes and updates. However, do not eliminate it all together.
5. Find out What Works Best for You
Many people are more productive during certain times of the day or work better if they take short breaks. Others may prefer to work for long hours and then relax. Finding the best strategies for yourself will help you more effectively budget and manage your time.
