He who every morning plans the transaction of the day and follows out the plan, carries a thread that will guide him through the labyrinth of the most busy life-Victor Hugo.
Kids. Pets. Bills. Television. Telephone. Life in general always seems to get in the way for those of us that are work at home professionals. Whether its ailing parents and noisy neighbors or kids spilling chocolate milk all over the fax machine, chances are something disastrous may happen. Those things can't be avoided, but the rest of life's little distractions can easily be ignored if you just follow a few simple guidelines.
Some of the most successful at home professionals get their work done because they treat it like a 9 to 5 job. I know, it sounds scary, and after all, you are a work at home professional to avoid the dreariness of every day life. You shun the restraints placed on the rest of the working world! Well, if you want to stay successful, sometimes a routine is necessary even for the most organized individuals.
So, in order to keep yourself organized, motivated and on track, here are a few simple suggestions on how to keep yourself in business without going insane:
1) Have a routine, have a plan!
Decide when the best time of day would be to work for you and stick with it! Noon to 5:00 PM? 7:00 PM to Midnight? Whatever works best for you, do it! Be your own boss and hold yourself accountable for "clocking in" at that same time every day you chose to work. Have some breakfast, take a shower and start plugging away. Also, get yourself organized and make a plan for every day. What will are you working on that day? Who do you have to call? Make a list of what needs to be done daily and stick to it.
2) Have an office
There is nothing worse than having your cat use a pile of invoices as a litter box, so having an office is essential for reasons like these. If you can, arrange a room exclusively as your office where you can close out the outside world. Having an office to yourself is one step further to being organized and less frazzled.
3) Take breaks
Cabin fever can be the number one killer for loosing motivation when you work from home. Sometimes, just going out for lunch and seeing other faces, getting fresh and moving around will help you to clear your thoughts. Make time to go to the gym during the day, see friends or go grocery shopping before or after your "shift". You'll be glad you did.
4) Talk to other work at home professionals
Sometimes, just talking to other people who do similar work helps. People that don't work from home often are unsympathetic or just don't understand the pressures of working from home. Check out forums and blogs on the internet and reach out to others like yourself to relieve stress and network new ideas.
