Taken for granted,
Quickly slips away like sand
Through open fingers.
Too busy,
Too angry,
Too difficult,
Too much trouble.
Distance continues.
A widening abyss
Grows day after day
Until years go by.
Bonds barely formed.
No one seems to care
Whether or not
Connection is made.
Too busy,
Too bothersome,
Too difficult,
Too many important things.
Life continues on,
People move in and out.
Days pass faster and faster,
Each year races by.
For some death comes too early,
The impact forever felt.
Others grow old, fearful
That they will soon be forgotten.
Too busy,
Too guilty,
Too difficult,
Too much time.
Time together
Taken for granted,
Quickly slips away like sand
Through outstretched fingers.

Post a CommentBeautifully written, Coral!
Beautifully said. And so true. I'm sure your poem will prompt many of us to pick up the phone and make plans with people we've been meaning to call.
Ouch, this rings so true. I was just thinking how my best friend since college days (early 70's) with whom I shared some of the most formative times, both great & ghastly, has become someone I love, but don't put much effort into staying "close" to what's happening in her life. When we meet, it's like no time has passed. Our hearts connect, but why do I keep putting off the email or call? Sand through open fingers, indeed. Your poem is a scary little kick in the butt I need. Thank you!
Too true, too sad, and beautifully written. It reminded me that I hadn't talked to my son in two months, I keep meaning to do that.
So very true and sad that so many live their lives this way.
Time needs be managed only if we feel it must..... a goal in retirement for many is to have it matter a lot less!
I feel so guilty sometimes about the time I lost while working. My sons are now reaping the benefit of that guilt. Even though I will never recover those days when they were little, they can now enjoy the reward of me being there for them while they return to college.
Oh Coral, this is painfully true! There is a bright spot to this power outage that we have been experiencing from the storm - we've spent a great deal of time with my elderly folks :) Cheers
