While unpaid overtime is illegal and punishable by a fine this will not stop employers from taking out there books and doing the math. They will ask questions such as how much is the fine, what are the odds of being caught? If they have good estimations of being caught once out of 5 times they commit the crime and the amount of the fine is significantly less than the amount of money saved in unpaid over time an employer will continue to commit the crime.
Another example is firing an employee months before retirement to get out of paying the full amount. Some trumped up charge is created maybe a write up than the employee is terminated This happens over and over again and it isn't even against the law.
How often have you seen a product advertised, bought it and found out it functions nothing like the commercial said it would? The markets are awash in shoddy products even worthless junk that breaks or even injures the buyer when the attempt is made to use said product. Useless warranties are sold or included with products that aren't worth the paper they are written on. Again, the usual remedy is a fine the effectiveness of which depends on figures of the corporation's accountants.
So what's wrong with these people? Why are they committing crimes and engaging in unfair practice in business? When you take on an employee you are than the provider of income for that employee. Employers are responsible as a group for the well fair and to a fair degree for the quality of life of a good part of the citizenry. So where's the disconnect? Don't they realize this? Corporations are acting like sociopaths shirking a very important responsibility hurting the quality of life and financial security of millions of innocent people. When you destabilize the finances of the population you hurt the whole country
Unless and until we can raise up a socially responsible business class that realizes their impact on the community and behaves accordingly the best remedy is to for get the fines and start thinking jail time. Or better yet fine them AND put them in federal prison for a good 3 to 5. Cant you just picture the look on some Trumpesque pirates face when federal marshals with bullet proof vests enter their office order them to place their hands on the back of their head? What do you suppose would be going through that criminals head right than? Well, let me tell you; they would probably be thinking it would have been better just to cough up the gold watch at old Joes retirement party.
