Comment Craziness
People enjoy receiving a wide variety of comments, but a few types have come to be expected. These include: thanking the user for adding you to their list of friends, happy birthday wishes, and greetings on major holidays. Comments take the place of traditional greeting cards in the online community. It's important to take the time to acknowledge your online friends. Even generic greetings are welcomed, though they don't take the place of real conversation.
Comment Don'ts
If you post large graphics, you can stretch the user's layout, distorting the look of the entire page. This will get your message deleted, and won't win you any brownie points with your friend. Do not use comments from little known sites unless you personally know the artist. Stick to well known sites that have been in business for years. Some images have been responsible for virus transmission and spyware, so only use pictures from well known sites with excellent safety track records, if you use them at all. Before deciding on a site, search the web for any reported problems with the site's files. Don't post multiple comments. If you're unsure if the remark posted, refresh the profile to check before resending your message.
Text Is Fine
If you don't wish to use a graphic in your comments, there's no need to do so. A message can be copied and pasted quickly, and is just as appreciated as a picture. In fact, some users have disabled any html code from being posted on their pages. If this is the case, a notice will appear in the comment box area.
Comment Graphics Made Easier
How can this time consuming process be streamlined? Find comment graphics online, then save the picture's html code to a word document. To make sure that you have graphics that fit with the layout and personalities of most profiles, you should choose two to three different comments to pick from for each occasion, such as a cute one and an edgier version. This takes a fraction of the time it would take to find an individual comment for each of your hundreds of friends. Comments aren't like dresses; if two people have the same one on their page, nobody gets their feelings hurt!
Keeping Your Comments Fresh
At least once per month, update your saved links. Graphics have a shelf life. Sometimes, the graphic has been moved or removed altogether from the website. By updating your file regularly, you won't leave a long trail of broken image icons in cyberspace. Refreshing your comment stock will also keep you from leaving the same remark twice on a friend's page.
Holiday Greetings
There's no sane way to say, "Happy Holiday" to 850 people in one day. Most social networking sites have different options for viewing your friends list, such as alphabetically or newest to oldest. Using these options to break up your contact list into more manageable pieces is the way to go. Going back to the parallel between profile page comments and paper greeting cards, it's okay to send greetings days or even weeks in advance of a holiday.
Make the Effort
Most people will appreciate the time you took to include them in your circle, just as you would a 'real life' friend. Sometimes, an online greeting is the only one a person will receive on that holiday, or on their birthday. It only takes a second to let someone know you thought of them and value them as a contact. Now that you've streamlined your commenting routine, you can spend more time actually getting to know the people you call Friends!
