If your office is littered with sticky notes, you already know that jotting down that elusive idea and putting it in plain view does wonders for jogging the memory. What you might not know is that with Window's Sticky Notes, you can keep those notes right on the desktop as reminders while you work. As a writer, I have found these to be indispensable.
Taking notes
When researching a topic for an article you typically have two choices 1) take notes in a separate program or 2) keep multiple tabs open and toggle back and forth, as you write. I always hated both these options. Fortunately, with sticky notes, I can have the best of both worlds. I simply open a new sticky note and give it a title. I then lock it to the screen (by clicking the little triangle in the upper left-hand corner) and use that space to jot down notes from multiple sources.
References
If you are anything like I am, you may get lost in your research and lose track of which reference contains which information. With Window's Sticky Notes, keeping track is easy. Simply add the reference to the note directly under the information you wish to use in your article. Highlight the URL and pull it onto the sticky note. When you are ready to write, all the information you need is at your fingertips.
Saving Sticky Notes
Windows Sticky Notes can be saved for future use. This comes in handy when you find resources that you think you might use in another article. Simply pull up a new note and title it accordingly. Add the info and right click on the gray bar at the top. A drop down menu allows you to save the sticky.
Appearance
Sticky Notes are customizable and allow you to choose the color of the sticky note, font type and color, and to adjust the size and placement of the sticky note on the computer screen. I'll admit it, I stick with the traditional yellow sticky with black font, but if you want something a bit more lively, go ahead and play with the colors to get the look that's right for you.
Using Window's Sticky Notes (you can download it for free) saves me time and keeps me organized as a writer. Not only does it make my work as an online writer easier, it gives me confidence knowing that I always have the correct reference for the information I reference in my work. Go ahead. Give it a try. You've got nothing to lose and you just might find your life as a writer just got a little easier.
