What's so Crazy About It?

Kathy Foust
Time travel may be possible in a capsule or using some type of scientific formula that I wouldn't even attempt to contemplate. It might really end up being a matter of clicking our heals together or saying "Make it so". I'm talking about a different kind of time travel. How about time travel with accountability?

Today a good friend of mine introduced me to her time machine. It was a letter. A decade ago, she wrote herself a kind of letter of prediction. She stated who she was, age, date, weather and so on. She even listed prices. And yes, I did want to cringe when I saw the gas prices. In this portion, she provided factual background about the time she was currently living in. Then she went on to say what she expected her life to be like in 10 years. This is the tenth year.

As I read her letter, I could imagine her 10 years ago writing it. I could see her hopes and dreams for the next 10 years. I could also see whether or not the events she had predicted had actually taken place. Of course, some of them had happened and some of them had not. It gave her pause to reflect for a moment. Actually, it gave me pause to reflect for a moment on my own past hopes and dreams. I thought of what a phenomenal tool that could be.

Create a time machine to record your present life and short term goals as well as long term goals and expectations. Personally, I'm going to write 2 of them. I want to write one that I'll open in the next 5 years and one that I'll open in the next 10 years.

This tool can be used to remind you that you have goals, that in however many years, you'll need to answer to yourself for it. What could be better for your overall mental health than having something to look forward to or maybe a reminder. Honestly, I'm sure I had goals 5 years ago that I have given up on by now. It's good to be reminded of those goals sometimes. When you are lost inside your own mind or stuck in a rut, that time machine might be able to help you get back on track or remind you of where you wanted to be. It might just be the mental health tool to get you back on track. Or, it might be the one to remind you of how fortunate you are right now.
