'Time Traveler' May Just Be Hard of Hearing

Emily Griffin
The rumor of there being a possible time traveler talking on her cell phone in a 1928 film flew through the internet faster than the DeLorean time machine. Although, experts are saying that the woman is just hard of hearing and has a "portable" ear trumpet.

The story initially came about in a youtube video that included fim footage showing the 1928 premier of the 1928 Charlie Chaplin film "The Circus" at Manns Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California. George Clark, who is an Irish Film maker pointed out this woman within the footage holding what he believes, is a cell phone device against her ear. According to him, the shape of the object implies that she is holding a cell phone and therefore is a time traveler.

What Clarke didn't consider was that a small portable ear trumpet could be a possibility says historians, who have provided LiveScience with photographs with images of small ear trumpets for people to compare too. You can see the images if you click here.

"As you can tell from these, old-fashioned mechanical or resonating hearing aids were not necessarily long and rounded," said Philip Skroska, an archivist at the Bernard Becker Medical Library of Washington University in St. Louis. "Short, compact rectangular forms were not unusual."

Basically, these hearing aids could look like a cell phone to some people with very creative imaginations and a little too much time on their hands.

Even if it were a time traveler there were no cell towers then and it would not have been possible to use a cell phone even if you had one. Maybe she was talking to the USS Enterprise.
